d. Insert the needle into the reservoir fill port, open the clamp, and aspirate until all
fluid/air is removed.
e. Close the clamp and remove the syringe containing the aspirate from the extension
tubing set and discard the syringe.
f.
Repeat steps 1 through 4.
Note: For pumps with a reservoir valve, the amount of time before the valve will release
is dependent on the duration and the amount of pressure applied after the valve is first
activated. The more pressure exerted, the longer it may take to release the valve.
6. When filling is complete, close the clamp and carefully remove the needle from the
reservoir fill port septum.
7. Remove the cleansing agent from the patient's skin using an alcohol pad.
8. Apply an adhesive bandage, if desired.
9. Discard all components of the kit.
Programming the pump
1. If the drug concentration or drug has been changed, program a bridge bolus.
2. If any prescription information has changed, enter the changed information into the
clinician programmer: for example drug name, drug concentration, infusion rate, or
volume of prescribed fluid in the pump reservoir.
3. Update the pump.
After the refill procedure
1. Print out the patient's prescription and pump settings (pump status).
2. Place the prescription and pump settings (pump status) information in the patient's
records.
3. Determine the refill date from the printout.
4. Schedule a refill appointment.
