GENERAL INFORMATION

COVERING: SAFETY PRECAUTIONS & PLACING INTO SERVICE
AUTOMATIC PULSATION DAMPENERS
It is the responsibility of the employer to place this information into the hands of the operator.
A Pulsation Dampener is a passive device attached to a reciprocating pump to minimize pressure
pulsations. The pulsation dampener housing contains an isolated pressure-adjustable chamber charged
with a compressed gas to dampen pump pulsations
Use the Pulsation Dampener only as described in this manual. Any other use not recommended by the
manufacture may cause equipment damage and / or injury to persons.
READ, UNDERSTAND, AND FOLLOW THIS INFORMATION TO AVOID INJURY AND PROPERTY DAMAGE.
EXCESSIVE AIR PRESSURE
STATIC SPARK
EXPLOSION HAZARD
The EC Declaration of Incorporation (located near the end of
the manual) states that these pulsation dampeners have been
reviewed as components and conform to the requirements of
the EU "Machinery Directive". Additionally, the models conform
to the EU "ATEX Directive" and may be used in some potentially
explosive atmospheres as defi ned by Group II 2GD X, but ONLY
when the special conditions listed below under the section "Spe-
cial Conditions for Pulsation Dampeners in Potentially Explosive
Atmospheres". The models are listed on the Declaration of Incor-
poration which includes both the Machinery and ATEX directives
in the section titled "This product complies with the following
European Community Directives".
The explosive hazard assessment of the complete machine into
which this pulsation dampener will be incorporated will deter-
mine the fi nal ATEX marking and conditions. Because of this Pul-
sation Dampener's fi nal machine application is not known and
have not been marked with the ATEX directive symbols.
SAFETY INFORMATION - EXPLANATION OF
SAFETY SIGNAL WORDS
WARNING
WARNING indicates a hazardous situation
which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury.
CAUTION CAUTION, used with the safety alert symbol,
indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided,
could result in minor or moderate injury.
NOTICE
NOTICE is used to address practices not re-
lated to personal injury.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS FOR PULSATION
DAMPENERS IN POTENTIALLY EXPLOSIVE
ATMOSPHERES (ATEX)
WARNING
Non-compliance with any of these special con-
ditions could result in ignition of explosive atmospheres.
Only pulsation dampener models that comply with the EU
"ATEX Directive" should be used in potentially explosive
atmospheres.
Rubbing and friction can cause sparks or elevated
temperatures may be a source of ignition of an explosive at-
mosphere.
WARNING DUST IGNITION HAZARD. Certain dusts may
ignite at pump surface temperature limits. Ensure proper
housekeeping to eliminate dust buildup on the pulsation
dampener.

WARNING
STATIC SPARK. Can cause explosion resulting in
severe injury or death. Ground pulsation dampener and
pumping system.
Sparks can ignite fl ammable material and vapors.
The pumping system and object being sprayed must be
grounded when it is pumping, fl ushing, recirculating or spraying
fl ammable materials such as paints, solvents, lacquers, etc. or
used in a location where surrounding atmosphere is conducive
to spontaneous combustion. Ground the dispensing valve or
device, containers, hoses and any object to which material is
being pumped.
Use the pulsation dampener grounding lug provided for
connection of a ground wire to a good earth ground source.
Use ARO part no. 66885-1 ground kit or a suitable ground wire
(12 ga. / 2.6 mm min.).
Secure pulsation dampener, connections and all contact points
to avoid vibration and generation of contact or static spark.
Consult local building codes and electrical codes for
specifi c grounding requirements.
After grounding, periodically verify continuity of electrical
path to ground. Test with an ohmmeter from each component
(e.g., hoses, pulsation dampener, pump, clamps, container,
spray gun, etc.) to ground to insure continuity. Ohmmeter
should show 0.1 ohms or less.
Submerse the outlet hose end, dispensing valve or device in
the material being dispensed if possible. (Avoid free streaming
of material being dispensed.)
Use hoses incorporating a static wire or use groundable
piping.
Use proper ventilation.
Keep fl ammables away from heat, open fl ames and sparks.
Keep containers closed when not in use.
WARNING
EXPLOSION HAZARD. Do not exceed maximum
fl uid inlet pressure of 100 p.s.i. (6.9 bar). Operating at higher
pressure can cause explosion, resulting in property damage or
severe injury.
WARNING If elevated temperatures or elevated vibration
levels are detected, shut the pump off and discontinue its
use until it can be inspected and/or repaired.
WARNING Do not perform maintenance or repairs in an
area where explosive atmospheres are present.
