Speedaire Operating Instructions and Parts Manual
Models 4B242A and 4B243A
Installation (Continued)
Allow the pads to absorb vibrations.
When isolators are used, a flexible cou-
pling should be installed between the
pump and service piping.
The unit should be mounted on a flat,
even surface.
PIPING
Never use plastic
(PVC) pipe for com-
pressed air. Serious injury or death could
result.
Bury underground lines below the frost
line and avoid pockets where conden-
sation can gather and freeze.
Apply air pressure to the piping instal-
lation and make sure all joints are free
from leaks BEFORE underground lines
are covered.
Before putting the compressor into ser-
vice, find and repair all leaks in the pip-
ing, fittings and connection.
ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION
All wiring and
electrical connections
must be performed by a qualified electri-
cian. Installations must be in accordance
with local and national codes.
GROUNDING
This product must be grounded.
Grounding reduces the risk of electrical
shock by providing an escape wire for
the electric current, if short circuit
occurs. This product must be equipped
with a power cord or cable that pro-
vides a grounding wire.
Improperly grounded motors are
shock hazards. Make sure all the
equipment is properly grounded.
WIRING
Local electrical wiring codes differ from
area to area. Source wiring and protec-
tor must be rated for at least the
amperage and voltage indicated on the
motor nameplate, and meet all electri-
cal codes for this minimum. Use a slow
blow fuse type T or a circuit breaker.
Motor protection should be used when
a motor built-in thermal overload pro-
tection is not provided. Some 3 phase
units require a magnetic starter
(See Figure 3).
Overheating, short
circuiting and fire
damage will result from inadequate wiring.
Operation
1. Remove the breather and fill pump
with approximately 16 oz. of ISO
100 industrial grade air compressor
oil [Model 4ZF21 (mineral oil) or
1WG49 (synthetic oil)].
2. Turn outlet valve to open air flow.
3. Run the unit for 30 minutes, under
no load, to break in pump parts.
The compressor is now ready for
use.
NOTE: This model is equipped with a
pressure switch that automatically
turns the motor OFF when the outlet
pressure reaches 40 psiG. After air is
used and drops to 30 psiG the pressure
switch automatically turns the motor
back on.

Maintenance
FOR EFFICIENT OPERATION BEFORE
EACH USE:
1. Check air filter.
2. Check oil.
3. Pull ring on safety valve and allow
the ring to snap back to normal
position. While system is under pres-
sure, this valve automatically releas-
es air if the line pressure exceeds the
preset maximum. (Figure 4)
Figure 4
Disconnect power and release all
pressure from the system before
attempting to install, service,
relocate or perform any maintenance.
Do not attempt to
tamper with the
ASME safety valve. This valve should be
checked occasionally. If air leaks after the
ring has been released, or the valve is stuck
and cannot be actuated by the ring, the
safety valve must be replaced.
