Cylinder Head-Leakage Tester
ENG
Operating instructions:
The chamber of the tester is filled with test liquid up to the level indicator.
1. Preparing the test liquid:
Hold the tester inclined to the mouth, slowly exhale and at this actuate the suction bulb only 2 to 3 times. The
liquid of this sample changes its colour to blue-green or green-yellow. Check this before each test. Then suck
in fresh air using the suction bulb until the colour changes again to dark blue-green.
2
Important: This test sensitises the test liquid and guarantees the proof of smallest quantities of CO
.
2. Testing process
Remove closure of the cooling unit or of the compensation tank and immediately position the tester on it in
2
order to avoid escaping of warm air and possibly existing CO
gases. Actuate the suction bulb about 5 times -
for diesel engines about 10 to 15 times - and suck the air through the tester from the air cushion via the water
level of the cooling water. Do not suck in any cooling water.
Reaction:
If the liquid again changes colour from blue-green to green-yellow it is perfectly proven that there is a leakage.
2
Only an increased CO
content in the air cushion caused by combustion gas can effect this colour change.
Do not reuse the used test liquid after finishing the test process since alkaline impurities may negatively
influence the sensitivity. Clean the test chambers with rinsing liquid. Then you can reuse the device for the
following test.
Disposal:
The liquids are harmless non-flammable, acid-free and can be poured away without complying with any
particular precautionary measures. (However, it is necessary to remove colour residues on cloth with water).
General information:
The CO tester allows a safe diagnosis within a few minutes without time-consuming disassembly of units and
is perfect for routine tests – therefore it is often used e.g. for after-sales service.
In addition, it is possible to perfectly prove other not recognisable smallest leakages - e.g. interferences
occurring only sometimes at high load (on motorways or when driving in the mountains) as well as at short
distances (if the engine does not attain its operating temperature).
Mode of action:
The blue tracer fluid in the chambers of the tester is changing colour to green-yellow for a few seconds if the
2
2
sucked in air contains more CO
(carbon dioxide). The CO
detector double chamber system avoids
indication errors by possibly existing alkaline remnants which might falsify the reactions. They are absorbed in
2
the bottom chamber whereas CO
is introduced in the adjacent chamber causing a colour change of the test
liquid.
Usage:
In case of loss of water, it is used to test the cooling system after extreme overheating of the motor (e.g. by
defective V-belts or thermostats), if a leakage between the combustion chamber and the cooling system is
suspected. In case of a damaged cylinder head gasket or if sealing surfaces hairline cracks occur or if the
cylinder head is getting porous.
Before refilling new coolant especially during after-sales service at the beginning of the winter season.
