Be sure to note which brace you are using
and follow the instructions that apply to that
brace. Unless otherwise stated, these
instructions apply to all of the braces listed.
INDICATIONS
• To help protect the thumb to allow healing
following injury

• May be used for arthritis and tendonitis and
other repetitive motion injuries of the thumb

• May be used for conservative treatment for
deQuervain's syndrome

• May be used to decrease pain and
hypertrophic scarring following surgery and
suture removal
CONTRAINDICATIONS
• Not for severe sprains, immediate treatment
following fractures, or if rigid support is
required
• Not for use directly over open wounds and
infected areas
• May not be for people with circulatory
problems
PRECAUTIONS
• If unusual swelling, skin discoloration or
discomfort occurs, use should be
discontinued and a healthcare professional
consulted.
• The brace should fit snugly and
comfortably without interfering with
circulation.

TakeOff Gel Shell Thumb Support
• This brace is to be fitted initially by a
healthcare professional who is familiar with
the purpose for which it is prescribed. The
healthcare professional is responsible for
providing wearing instructions and
precautions to other healthcare
practitioners, care providers involved in the
patient's care, and the patient.
• After heating splinting material, always
check its temperature before applying it to
the patient.

Thumb Support:
CARE AND CLEANING
Prior to cleaning, remove optional stay and Gel
Shell pad from brace and fasten hook closures.
Fabric splint
• For extended use, soak the fabric for five
minutes in a solution of mild detergent and
cold water. Rinse the detergent out
completely. Do not wring. Allow to air dry
thoroughly before reuse.
Gel Shell pad (TakeOff Gel Shell Thumb
Support only)
• Hand wash in warm water (hot water may
yellow the pad) and mild soap. Rinse
thoroughly. Press gently to remove excess
water and let it air dry. Be sure the pad is
completely dry before reapplying it.

Light stay (TakeOff Custom
and Gel Shell Thumb Supports only)
The stay will lose its shape in temperatures
over 135°F (57°C). It should be kept away
from sources of heat such as ovens, hot
water, open flames, and sunny car windows.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
TakeOff Thumb Support
1. Place the brace on a flat surface with the
foam (white) side up.
2. Position the hand on the brace so the wider
end of the brace is at the wrist and fasten the
long strap around the wrist.
3. Be sure the stay is lined up with the thumb
nail and fasten the short strap around the
thumb.

Optional stay:
Position the indented part of
the stay between the MCP and CMC joints.
The stay should fit along the radial aspect of
the thumb, wrist and partial forearm (B). The
distal end should lie proximal to the IP joint. If
necessary, the stay can be molded for a more
exact fit by heating it for 30 seconds in water
heated to 150° to 160°F (65–70°C). Place the
stay in the pocket in the brace (C).
Optional Gel Shell pad (TakeOff Gel Shell

Thumb Support only):
Fasten the back of
the pad to the surface of the pocket for the
stay (D). Remove the protective plastic sheet
from the surface of the gel pad.
3. Place the brace on a flat surface with the
foam (white) side up. Position the hand on the
brace so the wider end of the brace is at the
wrist and fasten the long strap around the
wrist. Fasten the short strap around the
thumb.
