The plasma welding torches work with two arcs (pilot and main arcs)
adjustable independently of one another and supplied with power from the
power source. The pilot arc is burning between a cathodically poled tungsten
electrode and an anodically poled copper nozzle. It is ignited by means of a
high-frequency voltage and used to ignite the main arc. The main arc is burning
between the tungsten electrode and the anodically poled work-piece. The
plasma gas exits at the opening of the plasma nozzle as a high-energy plasma
jet and provides the thermal energy required for welding. The filler material is
fed to the process in wire form. The arc and the molten pool are protected by
