Axle Nut Socket Set
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
NOTE:
In some cases, it may be necessary to loosen axle shaft nut with the vehicle on the ground and with the brakes applied. In other cases, axle shaft nut
may be loosened with wheel removed from vehicle. Refer to original equipment manufacturer's vehicle servicing information for procedures.
Removal
1. Determine whether manufacturer recommends loosening axle shaft nut with vehicle on ground and brakes applied, or with the wheel removed from
vehicle. Refer to servicing information for axle shafts.
2. If the vehicle manufacturer recommends first removing the wheel, loosen but do not remove lug nuts. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove lug
nuts. Remove wheel and set aside.
3. For both axle nut removal procedures (on ground or wheel off), remove the cap that covers the axle nut (if equipped). Remove cotter pin (if
equipped).
4. Select a socket that snugly fits the axle nut. Loosen axle shaft nut. It may prove necessary to use a powered impact wrench, such as an air impact
wrench or battery powered impact wrench.
5. Remove axle shaft nut.
6. When installing axle shaft nut, tighten nut to proper torque specifications. Replace cotter pin (if equipped). Refer to manufacturer's servicing
information. Many manufacturers recommend replacing both the axle shaft nut and cotter pin once used. Refer to original equipment manufacturer's
vehicle servicing information for recommendations.
