4.2.3 Computer's Connection
A personal computer with a COM port is needed in order to operate the program-
mable Hipot Tester via the RS-232 interface.
The connections between the instrument and computer are as follows:
1.
Connect one end of a RS-232 cable to the computer.
2.
Connect the other end of the cable to the RS-232 port on the programmable
Hipot Tester.
3.
Turn on the programmable Hipot Tester.
4.
Turn on the computer.
4.2.4 The RS-232 Connection Testing
If you want to test whether the RS-232 connection is working, you can send a com-
mand from the computer. For instance, using a terminal program send the query
command:
*idn?
The Manufacturer, model number, serial number and firmware version will be dis-
played in the following similar format:
AEMC inc., H216,0,FW1.00
If you do not receive a proper response from the Hipot Tester, please check to see
if the power is on, the RS-232 baud rate are the same on both sides, and all cable
connections are active.
4.3
Using Commands
4.3.1 Input and Output Buffer
The Hipot incorporates 128 bytes input and 128 bytes output buffering for storing
the pending commands or return messages to prevent the transmitted commands
of remote control and return messages from missing data. As the maximum stored
capacity for Error/Event buffer is 20 groups of messages, it should be noted that
input data exceeding the capacity by using these buffers will cause missing data.
4.3.2 RS-232 Message Terminators
As there is no end of message signal on the RS-232 bus, use LF as end of
message. When a series of commands are sent to the instrument, a LF must be
added to be recognized as the end of message. As for query command, the return
message from the instrument also uses a LF for the PC to recognize the end of
message.
