WARNING
Boats can become unstable when engaging
forward or reverse gears or when changing
direction.
The result could be slipping or falling within the
boat or overboard.
• Operate the boat with occupants and the
operator safely seated.
• DO NOT stand or make sudden changes in
direction while the boat is in motion.
• Any person operating the boat MUST have full
knowledge of the operation and handling of the
motor and boat.
• DO NOT operate while under the influence of
medication or alcohol.
• Every person on board must wear and use a U.S.
Coast Guard approved Personal Flotation
Device (PFD).
WARNING
Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide, an
odorless, colorless, poison gas.
Breathing carbon monoxide can cause nausea,
fainting or death.
• Start and run engine outdoors.
• Do not start or run engine in an enclosed area.
• Avoid back trolling and prolonged running with high
winds from the stern that could expose you to high
concentrations of exhaust gasses.
LUBRICATION / OIL
ENGINE OIL RECOMMENDATION
• Oil capacity is approximately 0.7 liters or 24 oz.
CAUTION:
Engine shipped from Briggs &
Stratton without oil. Before starting engine, fill with
oil. Do not over-fill.
• Use no special additives with recommended oils. Do not
mix oil with gasoline.
• Use a high quality detergent oil classified For Service
SF, SG, SH, SJ" or higher such as Briggs & Stratton 30,
Part Number 100005.
• Use recommended SAE viscosity grade oil per starting
temperature according to chart.

The use of non-synthetic multi-viscosity oils (5W-30,
10W-30, etc.)in temperatures above 40° F (4° C) will
result in higher than normal oil consumption.

SAE 30 oil, if used below 40° F (4° C), will result in hard
starting and possible engine bore damage due to
inadequate lubrication.
Checking and Adding Oil
• Engine must be in an upright vertical position when
checking and changing oil.
• Check oil level with dipstick before starting engine.
• Keep oil level at FULL mark on the dipstick.
• Do not overfill.
• Check level daily, or after every eight (8) hours of use.
GEAR CASE OIL RECOMMENDATION
CAUTION:
from factory with oil. Engine oil and gear
case oil are not interchangeable.
• Gear case holds approximately 118 cc or 4 oz.
• Use a high quality 80W-90W gear oil.
• Do not use special additives.
Gear Case Lubrication
Drain and fill the gear case with fresh oil every 50 hours and at
the end of the boating season.
FUEL
FUEL RECOMMENDATION
This engine is certified to operate on gasoline. Exhaust
Emission Control System: EM (Engine Modifications).
Type of Fuel to Use
Use clean, fresh, regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum of
77 octane. Fresh fuel prevents gum from forming in the fuel
system or on essential carburetor parts. Purchase fuel in
quantities that can be used within 30 days.
Do not use gasoline which contains Methanol. Do not mix oil
with gasoline.
Adding Fuel
Clean around fuel fill before removing cap to refuel. Remove
cap. Fill tank to approximately 1-1/2 inches below top of neck
to allow for fuel expansion. Be careful not to overfill.
Replace cap and connect the fuel line to the outboard before
starting.
Keeping Fuel Fresh
For engine protection, we recommend use of Briggs & Stratton
Fuel Fresh Gasoline Additive, Part No. 5041, available from
any Authorized Briggs & Stratton Service Dealer. Mix additive
with gasoline in fuel tank or storage container. Run engine for a

INSTALLATION
OUTBOARD PLACEMENT

WARNING
• The capacity plate on the boat shows the
maximum horsepower allowable for your boat.
DO NOT exceed this limit.
• DO NOT operate the boat until the outboard has
been properly installed.
• Use the instructions below as a guide. Follow the
boat manufacturer's recommendations to install
the outboard to the boat.

1. Center the outboard
on the transom

2. Be sure the anti-ventilation plate

positioned below the bottom
of the boat.

3. Tighten the clamp screws
to secure the outboard to
the transom.
CAUTION: Inspect clamps periodically for tightness
to prevent engine from coming off transom.
4. Adjust the tilt pin to obtain a vertical position for the
outboard. See Trim Angle.
5. Test the range of steering motion

TRIM ANGLE

• The trim angle of the outboard can be adjusted to suit the
transom angle and varying load conditions. Consult the
boat manufacturer's instructions also.
• The outboard has six trim positions
• The ideal trim angle allows the anti-ventilation plate to

to the water surface.
• If the bow of the boat is above horizontal
in a lower adjustment hole to move the outboard closer to
the transom (example from hole A" to hole B" or C").
• If the bow of the boat is below horizontal
in a higher adjustment hole to move the outboard farther
from the transom (example from hole F" to hole E" or
D").
WARNING
• Do not adjust the trim angle while the engine is
running.
Tilt Outboard
WARNING
• The outboard can be tilted to gain clearance and avoid
lower unit damage when landing the boat in shallow
water.
The outboard cannot be locked in the UP position.
• Tilt the outboard using ONLY the tilt/carry handle
the rear of the outboard. Pull the tilt/carry handle in the
