Introduction

the wearer with environmental listening capabilities.
Auditory Environmental Awareness describes the ability to use information gathered from
the users environment through his/her sense of hearing. This includes sound detection,
localization, distance estimation, face to face communication, and any other use of human
hearing. Individuals such as soldiers or hunters spend significant time in a quiet environment
where auditory environmental awareness is critical, yet have the need for on-demand hearing
protection from weapons fire and other hazardous noise. A familiarization period, where the
user adapts to the differences in auditory information as it comes though the tactical earplug,
is highly recommended.

both attenuation and function may be impaired.
n Warnings!
• Misuse or failure to wear hearing protectors at all times that you are exposed to
hazardous noise may result in hearing loss or injury. For proper use, see supervisor,
User Instructions, or contact 3M Technical Service. This hearing protector helps reduce
exposure to hazardous noise and other loud sounds.
• Ensure the hearing protector is fitted, adjusted, regularly checked for serviceability, and
maintained in accordance with these user instructions. Improper fit of this device will
reduce its effectiveness in attenuating noise. Consult the enclosed instructions for
proper fit.
• If there is any drainage from your ear or you have an ear infection, consult with your
physician before wearing eartips. Failure to do so may result in hearing loss or injury.
• In instances where dual hearing protection is required, the tactical earplug should be
powered off prior to use.
n Cautions!
• For greater comfort and safety when using the three-flange 3M UltraFit Eartips, remove
the eartip slowly with twisting motion to gradually break the seal.
• Only use compatible 3M™ PELTOR™ Eartips. Do not insert the earplug directly into the
ear without a correctly attached 3M PELTOR eartip.
• When worn according to the User Instructions, this hearing protector helps reduce
exposure to both continuous noises, such as industrial noises and noises from vehicles
and aircraft, as well as very loud impulse noises, such as gunfire. It is difficult to predict
the required and/or actual hearing protection obtained during exposure to impulse noises.
For gunfire, the weapon type, number of rounds fired, proper selection, fit and use of
hearing protection, proper care of hearing protection, and other variables will impact
performance. If your hearing seems dulled or you hear a ringing or buzzing during or
after any noise exposure (including gunfire), or for any other reason you suspect a hearing
