M.4s OA
comfort
Intended purpose
M.4s OA comfort is a varus/valgus brace.
The product is exclusively to be used for
the orthotic fitting of the knee and only
on unbroken skin or if any wounds have
been properly covered.
Indications
• Severe medial or lateral compartment
osteoarthritis (class III at least) in
conjunction with complex ligament
instability.
• Unicompartmental load relief before
HTO (brace test)
• To relieve the load for painful stress
fractures (e.g. tibial plateau)
• Cartilage surgery / mosaicplasty /
meniscus repair / corrective osteotomy
which require(s) post-operative load
relief of the medial or lateral
compartment
• Extreme overload of the medial and
lateral compartments
Contra-indications
Bilateral (bicondylar) osteoarthritis of
the knee
Putting on the brace
• Open all straps and pull the num-
bered ends out of the slots on the belt.
Tip: To stop the straps from sticking to
each other, you should fasten the
velcro part after this step.
• Sit on the edge of a chair and pull the
brace over the affected leg. Bend your
leg at approximately 70°.
• Position the brace so that the centre
of the joint (middle of the extension
wedges) sits level with the top edge of
the kneecap and slightly behind the
leg's lateral central line. Please make
sure that the brace has been placed
on the leg straight and is not twisted.
• Fasten strap 1 first and then strap 2.
• Keep your leg bent and check again
that the brace is positioned correctly.
• Then, fasten straps 3 to 6 in order.
• Take a few steps in order to ensure
that the brace is sitting correctly. If
required, the straps can be adjusted,
in the same order, to ensure that the
brace is fitted correctly.
• To take off the brace, open all of the
straps and pull the brace off.
Adjusting for Varus/Valgus Load Relief
Have your technician explain the
adjustment options for the M.4s OA to
you so that you are clear on them. This
will enable you to find a way to
manipulate the brace safely so that you
can benefit from optimal support from
the brace as quickly as possible.
Setting Load Relief: for Professionals
Set the load relief mechanism to neutral.
This is achieved when the pressure
component lies flat against the side of
the knee joint and the patient can only
feel slight pressure. Ensure that both
brace joints are still parallel to each
other. Then increase the pressure by
turning all of the setting screws a
quarter-turn towards "+". This is a good
base setting for the first wearing period.
Let the patient walk around wearing the
brace for a few minutes. If necessary,
adjust the setting screws again.
Setting the restrictions for flexion
and extension (can only be carried
out by an orthopaedic technician)
Extension restriction wedges, silver
(stretch restriction): 0°, 10°, 20°, 30°, 45°
Flexion restriction wedges, black (bend
restriction):
0°, 10°, 20°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75°, 90°
Can be immobilised at:
0°, 10°, 20°, 30°, 45°
