The BD 96 mini described in these Instructions for Use is in
accordance with Directive 89/686/EEC. It is a compressed
air breathing apparatus according to EN 137.

Description
Basic apparatus 96 mini
The apparatus can be used with any of the following
compressed air cylinders according to choice:
• 2 l/300 bar composite cylinder
• 2 l/300 bar steel cylinder
• 4 l/200 bar steel cylinder
The apparatus can be used with any of the following lung
governed demand valves according to choice:

LA 96-AE
LA 96-N

Description of Apparatus

The MSA AUER Compressed air breathing apparatus
BD 96 mini is a self-contained, open-circuit breathing
apparatus operating independently of the ambient air.
Breathable air is supplied to the user according to his
demand from acompressed air cylinder via a pressure
reducer, a demand controlled valve assembly according to
EN 137 (see Instructions for Use for lung governed demand
valve) and a facepiece according to EN 136 (see
Instructions for Use for full face mask).
The exhalation air is released through the exhalation valve
of the facepiece directly to the ambient atmosphere.
The apparatus is a pure gas protection device and not
suitable for underwater diving.

Use with MSA AUER Medium Pressure

Y-Piece with Nonreturn Valve

With a Y-piece, the MSA AUER compressed air breathing
apparatus BD 96 mini can be connected to an external air
source (e.g. compressed air cylinder, factory air line, etc.)
without interrupting breathing. The Y-piece, which blocks in
one direction, is connected in the medium pressure line
between the pressure reducer and lung governed demand
valve. The medium pressure of the external air source
should be higher than the medium pressure of the
compressed air breathing apparatus so that air is not drawn
from the BD 96 mini breathing apparatus. In case the
medium pressure of the external air source is lower, the
cylinder valve of the breathing apparatus must be closed,
so that air is not taken from the BD 96 mini compressed air
cylinder (see Instructions for Use of Lung Governed
Demand Valve and Medium Pressure Y-Piece).
This permits saving air from one´s compressed air cylinder
at the worksite or decontamination after work if the own air
supply is already exhausted (see Sect. 10, Ordering
Information, for Part Numbers).
2.2 Use with MSA AUER
Automatic Switchover Valve (ASV)
With an automatic switchover valve, too, the compressed
air breathing apparatur BD 96 mini can be connected to an
external air source (e.g. compressed air cylinder, factory air
line, etc.) without interrupting breathing. The automatic
switchover valve is connected in the medium pressure line
between the pressure reducer and the lung governed
demand valve. With sufficient medium pressure in the
external air source, the switchover valve automatically
switches to the external air source. Conversely, if the
minimum pressure is not reached, it switches back to the
compressed air breathing apparatus BD 96 mini. When
breathing from the compressed air breathing apparatus, a
warning signal in the switchover valve sounds to alert the
user that he is comsuming air from his own cylinder. The
functioning of the warning device of the compressed air
breathing apparatus remains independent (see Instructions
Part-Number
for Use Switchover Valve and Instructions for Use

The carrying assembly consists of a carrying plate with hip
and shoulder straps. The assembly design permits individu-
al carrying modes. The position of the pressure reducer is
easily adjusted to the relative cylinders and carrying modes.
The harness can be quickly replaced. Both harness and
cylinder retaining strap are permanently nonflammable,
resp. self-extinguishing.
The cylinder retaining strap with tension lever permits
connection of compressed air cylinders with a diameter of
approx. 90 mm to approx. 160 mm (Fig. 1).
3.1.2
The pressure reducer 500 E mini has a brass housing. On
the pressure reducer is a blow-out release valve, a warning
device (audible), the pressure gauge line with pressure
gauge and the medium pressure line.
The pressure reducer reduces the cylinder pressure to
approx. 7 bar. The blow-out release valve is set for
activation at a pressure of approx. 11 bar inside the
medium pressure part.
The warning device is set to give off an audible signal when
the cylinder pressure is reduced to approx. 105 bar. It
continues to sound continuously, medium-pressure dosed
until the usable air supply is nearly exhausted. Depending
on the cylinder size, the opening pressure can be adjusted
down to 55 ± 5 bar (see Sect. 7.3.1.1).
The warning device functions without an injector, meaning
that no ambient air is drawn in to produce the audible
signal. Thus it will function also at high air humidity or water
spray even at temperatures around freezing.
The water-tight encapsulated and shock-protected
pressure gauge is connected to the pressure reducer by the
flexible pressure gauge line. The pressure gauge has an
easily readable, luminescent dial.
3.2
The MSA AUER steel and composite cylinders (carbon fiber
composite) are type-tested and approved for the respective
operating pressures.
The color is according to DIN 3171 or to local regulations.
The air inside the cylinders must be according to EN 12021.
Depending on the temperature and humidity of the ambient
atmosphere, icing may form on the cylinder valve, pressure
reducer and coupling; this, however, does not influence the
function of the apparatus.
Compressed air cylinders must be ordered separately.
