Operating Instructions
Installation
(Continued)
the safety valve setting. Incorrect selection
and installation of any tube, pipe or hose
could result in bursting and injury.
Never install a
shut-off valve
between compressor pump and safety
valve. Personal injury and/or equipment
damage may occur. In event that a shut-
off valve must be installed between
pump and tank, it is imperative that an
ASME code safety valve (with adequate
flow capacity and correct pressure set-
ting) be placed in line between shutoff
valve and compressor. Never use reduc-
ers in discharge piping.
Connect piping system to tank using the
same size fitting as the discharge port.
The discharge tube must have a check
valve installed downstream of the pump.
Use a check valve with an unloader port.

Figure 1 - Flywheel Installation
If flywheel arrives separate from the
compressor, install the flywheel before
putting compressor in service.
Make sure shaft and bore are clean and
dry. Do not put oil or other lubricants on
shaft or bore.
1. Put flywheel on the crankshaft being
sure that the arrow on the flywheel
fan blade faces out.
2. Center washer and lock washer on the
flywheel.
3. Insert torque screw through lock wash-
er, washer and flywheel, then screw it
into end of crankshaft.
4. To complete, tighten the torque screw
until its outer head breaks off or use a
torque wrench and tighten to 50 ft/lbs.
REPLACING EXISTING PUMP
If this unit replaces an existing pump, use
the same number of belts from the fly-
wheel to the pulley as the pump on the
compressor now. If that number is one,
put the belt in the groove closest to the
pump on the flywheel.
Do not operate compressor higher than
the rated speed. This is dangerous and
will severely shorten life of pump and may
overload electric motor.
All lubricated compressor pumps dis-
charge some condensed water and oil
with the compressed air. Install appropri-
ate water/oil removal equipment and con-
trols as necessary for the intended applica-
tion.
NOTICE
!
removal equipment may result in damage
to machinery or workpiece.
GUARDING
A belt guard must be installed
before operating the unit.
All moving parts must be guarded. All
electrical covers must be installed before
turning on the power.

Some residual oil may still be in the pump
leaving a thin coat on the sight glass,
however; there is not enough oil to oper-
ate the unit. Fill pump with single-viscos-
ity, ISO100 (SAE 30), non-detergent, com-
pressor oil. Add oil only through the oil
fill plug. Pouring oil into any other orifice
will cause oil to leak and spray out during
operation. Use Mobil Rarus
No. 4ZF21), available at your local branch.
Fill to the center of the sight gauge.
OIL PUMP OPERATION (FOR PRESSURE
LUBRICATED PUMPS ONLY)
Oil pump operation must be verified
before compressor is put into service.
1. Run the compressor for 2 minutes and
Failure to install
appropriate water/oil
2. If no oil leaks out, turn compressor OFF
3. Loosen brass nuts on oil pickup tube.
4. Squirt a liberal amount of oil into fit-
5. Repeat Step 1.
NOTE: Use of automotive engine oil will
cause carbon deposits to build up on the

valves. This will shorten the life expectan-

fluid, two-cycle oil or any oil treatment
product. Do not use diester synthetic oil.
