Solid state semi-conductor SPD circuitry for:
• 3803-DHP (Line to Line protection and both Line 1 and Line 2 to Ground).
• 3803-485 (Line to Line protection and Lines A, B, Com, Shld & Term to GND).
• SPDs are enclosed in a non-conductive ABS case. ABS is a flame retardant
thermoplastic, compliant with UL 497B polymeric material test requirements.
• SPDs are intended for use in data bus applications and essentially require
approximately a 5vdc potential difference. The voltage for SPDs are specifically
intended for a range from -4.5 to +4.5 VDC. Maximum continuous operating voltage is
9.6VDC.
INSTALLATION
1. WARNING: TO AVOID FIRE SHOCK OR DEATH, TURN OFF POWER at the installation
location by unplugging the data cable and turning the equipment power OFF.
2. Locate the Data Protection Module so that the SPD connections can be easily inserted into
the data cable without excessive tension on the wiring connections (Fig. 4).
3. Connect the Data Protection Module to chassis ground using the metallic base plate and/or
the attached braided cable. DO NOT ADD ANY EXTENSION TO THE "BRAIDED CABLE
TO GROUND" PATH.
WIRING PROCEDURE
FOR CAT. NO. 3803-DHP:
WARNING: TO AVOID FIRE SHOCK OR DEATH, TURN OFF EQUIPMENT POWER AND
DISCONNECT THE DATA CABLE AT THE SPD INSTALLATION LOCATION.
Cut the data cable, as shown in Fig. 4, and connect the cable to the 3803-DHP input and
output connectors as follows and shown in Figs. 1 and 2A:
1. Slip a large diameter piece of shrink tubing over both ends of the cut cable.
2. Remove 1" (25.4 mm) of the outer jacket from the cut ends of the data cable.
NOTE: Be sure YOU DO NOT cut the drain wire shorter than the other wires as it is used for
connection to the "SHLD" (Shield) terminal.
3. Remove excess length of the exposed portions of the foil shield, braided shield, and filler
cords from the cable.
4. Remove 0.125" (3.2 mm) of insulation from the end of each conductor wire.
5. Tin the Blue conductor wire, the clear conductor wire and the drain wire with solder.
6. Insert the tinned wires into the 3803-DHP connector terminals, as shown in Fig. 2A and
tighten the retaining screws.
7. Position the shrink tubing as required and apply the necessary heat for strain relief.

8. Plug the connectors into the appropriate "Input" and "Output" [PLC (Programmable Logic
Controlled)/SLC (Small Logic Controlled) load side locations] on the 3803-DHP module, as
shown in Fig. 3A.
9. Reconnect the modified equipment cable, as shown in Fig. 4.
POWER ON: Following data cable reconnection to the equipment, restore power to the
installation circuit by turning the power ON. INSTALLATION IS COMPLETE.
FOR CAT. NO. 3803-485:
WARNING: TO AVOID FIRE SHOCK OR DEATH, TURN OFF EQUIPMENT POWER AND
DISCONNECT THE DATA CABLE WHERE SPD PROTECTION IS REQUIRED.
Cut the data cable as located in Fig. 4 and connect the cable to the 485 input and output
connectors as follows and shown in Figs. 1 and 2B.
1. Slip a large diameter piece of shrink tubing over both ends of the cut cable. Using wire
strippers, remove 1" (25.4 mm) of the outer jacket from the cut ends of the data cable.
NOTE: Be sure YOU DO NOT cut the drain wire shorter than the other wires as it is used for
connection to the "SHLD" (Shield) terminal.
2. Remove 1" (25.4 mm) of the braided shield under the PVC jacket and cut back the two White
insulation strands.
3. Cut OFF the White-Blue stripe wire of the Blue-White stripe/White-Blue stripe pair. It is not
used with this device.
4. Remove 0.25" (6.4 mm) of insulation off the Orange-White stripe/White-Orange stripe pair.
DO NOT tin the wire tips.
5. Remove 0.25" (6.4 mm) of insulation off the Blue-White stripe wire. DO NOT tin the wire tips.
NOTE: Unless otherwise directed by existing wiring system requirements perform steps 6 to
10 as shown in Fig. 2B.
6. Twist the strands and insert the Orange-White stripe wire into terminal 5 (A).
7. Twist the strands and insert the White-Orange stripe wire into terminal 4 (B).
8. Twist the strands and insert the Blue-White stripe wire into the terminal 3 "COM" location.
9. Insert the shield/drain wire (non-jacketed) into Terminal 2 (SHLD).
10. Position the shrink tubing to prevent the end of shield from fraying and apply the necessary
heat for strain relief.
11. Plug the connectors into the appropriate "Input" and "Output" (PLC/SLC load side) locations
on the 485 module, as shown in Fig. 3B.
12. Reconnect the modified equipment cable as shown in Fig. 4.
POWER ON: Following data cable reconnection to the equipment, restore power to the
installation circuit by turning the power ON. INSTALLATION IS COMPLETE.
