WARNING AND CAUTIONS:
•
TO AVOID FIRE, SHOCK, OR DEATH; TURN OFF POWER AT CIRCUIT BREAKER OR FUSE AND TEST THAT THE POWER IS OFF BEFORE WIRING!
•
TO BE INSTALLED AND/OR USED IN ACCORDANCE WITH ELECTRICAL CODES AND REGULATIONS
•
IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT CATALOG NOS. 32000/42000 SPD UNITS BE INSTALLED BY AN ELECTRICIAN.
•
USE THIS DEVICE WITH COPPER OR COPPER CLAD WIRE ONLY.
DESCRIPTION
Leviton's 32000/42000 SPD Panel Protection Systems are high performance Surge Protective Devices. The
32000/42000 units are designed for use at the service entrance, sub-distribution or branch circuit panels. The
42000 units include additional filtering for reducing the effects of transients and unwanted high frequency noise.
Diagnostics provide visual, audible and remote contacts (Relay Leads) for the monitoring of protection status.

TO INSTALL
1.
Identify the device or load to be protected. Locate the SPD unit as close as possible to the electrical panel
serving the loads to be protected to minimize the effects of connection lead-length resistance and inductance.
2.
Identify the electrical system in use, Delta or Wye, and system voltage (L-L, L-N).
NOTE: Matching the SPD model and electrical system line voltage is critical! Identify the system to be
protected by measuring L-N and L-L voltages. Use extreme caution while making voltage measurements!
If you are unsure of the type of electrical system in use or the system voltage, stop and contact
an electrician.
Confirm that the maximum measured voltage does not exceed the maximum continuous line voltage
specified for the 32000/42000 units to be installed or damage will occur. See the Model Data table for
applicable voltage system applications. Figures 1-4 illustrate the wiring connections for each 32000/42000
unit configuration.
3.
Disconnect: Leads from the SPD unit must be connected to the power mains through a branch circuit
breakers (independent single-pole preferred). See figures 1, 2, 3 and 4 for corresponding circuit breakers.
When the SPD shares a 3-pole ganged breaker, National Electric Code (NEC) and local requirements
shall prevail (Not applicable in Canada-shared breaker is not allowed by CEC).
NOTE: The total connection length between the branch power lines and the SPD should be as short
as possible. Leads from the SPD units should be bundled together and secured with cable ties when
possible. For best suppression, the cable and some cable ties may be cut down from the supplied length
to allow for a shorter installation path.
4.
Mount the SPD units securely. The 32000/42000 units have a flange for surface mounting. Direct panel mounting applications should utilize a 3/4 in (1.9 cm) conduit knockout hole.
5.
When attaching the SPD connection leads to the power lines, all connection leads from the SPD unit should be cut to a length which provides the shortest path to the power
line. Avoid sharp bends. Lead wire insulation should not be cut or damaged.
6.
The suppressor's Black wires may be connected to L1, L2 and L3 without regard to phase, except for the 3 Phase, 4-Wire (High Leg Delta) connection. In this connection,
either of the two Black wires may be connected to L1 and L3 without regard to phase, but the Red wire must be connected to L2.
7.
The White wire should be connected to the system's Neutral bus on Wye systems. On Delta systems without Neutral, the White wire end should be insulated (capped with a
wire connector), taped and moved aside. For Delta Systems with Neutral (3 Phase, 4 Wire, Split Phase, High Leg), connect White wire to Neutral.
8.
The Green wire is attached internally to the 32000/42000 unit's metal enclosure. The Green wire must be grounded to the panel's ground bus, a direct ground conduit
connection to the panel, or both.
For isolated ground systems: Connect the Green wire to the panel, or use the conduit ground.
Do not connect the Green wire to isolated ground conductor(s).
9.
Activate the system by turning power ON (closing any main and SPD circuit breakers). The Green indicator lights should be ON. If indicator lights are not ON, consult an electrician.
10. Failure indication may occur due to excessive transients, a direct lightning strike or loss of power due to a tripped circuit breaker. If any of these events occur, one or more
Green LEDs will be OFF, the Red LED will flash and the audible tone will be activated. When power is applied to the SPD unit and one or more Green LEDs are OFF, the unit
has failed and must be replaced.
REMOTE DIAGNOSTICS
The unit is provided with form C ( 1 N.O. and 1 N.C. ) relay contact for remote indication of loss of protection. Connection to contact is provided via 18AWG, 600V rated leads.
Remote Diagnostic circuitry rated at 7 Amps at 240VAC or 30VDC. Lead designations are: N.O. = Yellow, N.C. = Blue and Common, C = Orange.
