Like the HomePlug AV technology used in establis-
hed devolo dLAN devices, devolo Magic uses the
household mains supply for data transmission and
secures ideal performance and stability in locations
where network cables are not viable or desired
and/or the Wi-Fi frequently falls short due to cei-
lings and walls.
To set up a devolo Magic network, you need
at least two devolo Magic devices. For tech-
nical
reasons,
devolo Magic series are not compatible with
dLAN devices.
2.2 Wi-Fi 6 – the high-efficiency
Wi-Fi
What distinguishes the new Wi-Fi 6 standard from
its predecessor, Wi-Fi 5?
Wi-Fi 6 (IEEE 802.11ax) is the next stage in the evo-
lution of the Wi-Fi standard. The evolved standard
expands upon the advantages of its predecessor
while offering even better functionality. It features
higher efficiency, greater flexibility and better sca-
lability on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency ranges.
Highlights of the devolo Magic 2 Wi-Fi 6 include
higher Wi-Fi speeds of up to 1800 Mbps and more
devices
from
the
efficient data transfer. This goal was reached by
optimising the Wi-Fi protocol. One of the improve-
ments is the individual control of the data rate de-
pending on the reachability of the Wi-Fi clients.
This optimisation boosts the efficiency of the pro-
tocol when there are multiple devices retrieving
data simultaneously. This is why the Wi-Fi 6 stan-
dard is also referred to as "high-efficiency Wi-Fi":
the objective is to increase throughput per unit of
surface area.
Another technology that is used to achieve this ef-
ficiency boost is OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency-
Division Multiple Access). This method enables Wi-
Fi access points to serve multiple clients simulta-
neously. For example, if two laptops are in a net-
work transmitting data over the same channel,
OFDMA ensures that each laptop is assigned one
or more narrow frequency blocks (RUs = Resource
Units). The Wi-Fi devices are assigned the Resource
Units depending on the application being used
and the bandwidth needed.
The RUs are transmitted simultaneously. As a re-
sult, the data are transferred without delay. When
large and/or small amounts of data are transmit-
ted simultaneously, the dynamically assigned RUs
ensure optimised data throughput without notice-
able latency.
