STARTING THE INFRARED WEEDER
CAUTION: Only turn 'ON' and use the device
outdoors. Always keep the device away from
people and animals.
- Holding the handle of the device with the burner just
above a non-flammable floor turn the valve on the
handle fully to the "ON" position (Fig 9 or 10).
- Wait approximately 20 seconds for the low pressure
gas to travel to the burner, then ignite the gas by
pressing the red piezo ignition button until you hear the
'click' then release the button. You may hear a sound
when the gas ignites and this is quite normal.
- If you do not hear any sound of the gas ignition and
the burner does not appear to get hot after a few
seconds then press the ignition button again to repeat
the ignition process.
- If you lift the burner vertically keeping the burner plate
facing towards the ground and look underneath you
will see the colour glow of the burner approximately a
minute after the gas has ignited (Fig 12).
- If you try several times to ignite the gas without
success, turn the gas valve on the handle to the 'OFF'
position. Wait until the gas has dispersed into the
atmosphere (5min) and then turn on the valve and try
the ignition again.
- After ignition the burner will take up to 1 minute to get
to an adequate operating temperature from cold.
CAUTION: Do not shake the device and keep the
burner plate facing towards the ground when
the gas is on, because a large flame may form.
Removing weeds
CAUTION: Accessible parts may become very
hot. Keep young children and pets away from
the appliance. We recommend wearing protective
clothing to avoid possible burns.
- Place the Infrared Weeder directly on top of the weed
and wait a few seconds.
- You do not need to apply any additional downward
force during the weeding.
- Avoid placing the burner surface on any raised solid
objects that could damage the grill underneath the
burner.
- Smoke may be emitted from the product during
weeding. This is normal, it is an indicator that the
weeding is done correctly (Fig. 11)
- On patios and driveways, the Infrared Weeder can be
moved slowly on its wheel over the weeds and pausing
for longer as needed on any more stubborn weeds.
- This wheel is not intended to allow the weeder to
stand alone unattended for safety reasons.
- Heat the weed for a few seconds, the plant cells will
dry out and the weeds are destroyed in 2 to 3 days.
Several treatments spaced in time may be needed on
resistant and tenacious weeds.
WARNING: Fire Hazard surface in heavy dry soil.
- The heating torch must be used away from
flammable materials and kept 2m from walls and
ceilings.
- Keep the Infrared burner pointing downwards level
with the ground, for safety as excessive flames may
result and to help prevent the wind blowing out the
flame.
- If using a gas hose and adaptor avoid twisting the
hose and check that connections remain tight during
use.
After use
- At the end of work and if using a gas cartridge, turn
the valve of the product to the 'OFF' position to shut the
flame off (Fig 13).
- When the product is new there can be some smoke
seen emanating from the product in the area of the
burner after the valve on the handle has been turned
'OFF'. This is quite normal and will cease to occur after
a few uses.
- Unscrew the gas cartridge clockwise, when viewed
from above the handle. Never store the device with
the gas cartridge connected (Fig 13). We recommend
that you do not throw away the cap protecting the gas
cartridge and that you put it back on after each use of
the cartridge to prevent dust from affecting the gas
flow.
-If you have used a gas bottle, ensure the gas is turned
off at the gas bottle first, then when the flame goes out
turn off the valve on the Infrared Weeder (Fig 14).
- The gas containers should only be changed in a well-
ventilated location, preferably outside, away from any
sources of ignition, such as naked flames, pilot lights,
electric fires and away from other people.
CAUTION: Product external surfaces can remain
very hot for up to 15 minutes after the gas is
turned 'OFF' therefore rest the weeder on a
surface that will not burn. Store, pack or transport the
product once it has cooled.
- Store the device and the gas container in a cool, dry,
and well-ventilated place.
