1. Ensure that the environment is safe for the transfer to take place. When satisfied, place the patient transfer assistant in front
of the service user.
2. Ensure that the service user's feet are placed on the base plate, using the foot markers as a guide. The legs should be in a
comfortable position, cushioned by the leg supports. To facilitate a comfortable position, adjust the height of the lower leg
supports so that the top is approximately two inches below the service user's knees.
3. Once you are sure that the patient transfer assistant is correctly positioned, lock both wheels by depressing a brake pedal.
Both wheels will lock regardless of which side you are walking on.
NB: The wheels must always be locked when the user stands up and sits down!
4. If the user needs help to stand up using the ladder belt or harness, place it safely around the user.
a. Place the ladder sling behind the user, with the non-slip material against the body and the lower edge resting on the seat
cushion.
b. If using the harness, place the lower section just below the user and the upper section against the lower back. Then secure
with the clasp.
Your method of applying a counterweight should be reviewed and approved as part of your risk assessment.
5. If you are using the ladder belt to aid transfer, secure it to one side of the frame by placing the desired ladder section over
the ladder belt anchor.
6. Ask the user to grasp the frame in a comfortable position. The user may hold any part of the handles. Service users who use
only one arm or hand can hold onto the central handles.
7. If you are helping the user to stand using the ladder belt, prepare yourself in a stable and safe starting position. Place your
nearest hand on top of the patient transfer assistant and hold the ladder belt handle with your other hand. Maintain good
posture with a straight back.
NB: Use your risk assessment and / or consult your lead / back manual care advisor if you are unsure of the correct manual
handling techniques.
8. When you and the service user are both ready, encourage them to stand. Gradually transfer your weight in unison, maintain
tension on the ladder strap and help the service user to stand. Maintain eye contact and communicate clearly.
NB: When using the patient transfer aid, a counterweight must be applied at each stage of the sit-to-stand/stand-to-sit
transfer. Your method of applying a counterbalance may vary, for example using the ladder strap, placing a foot on the
footrest and reinforcing the frame, or supporting the service user in a traditional method. Your method of applying a
counterweight will need to be
This patient transfer aid has been designed for use with one or more carers. However, it is important that a risk assessment is
carried out prior to use. In each individual case, assess the risks and make notes. Assess the person's ability to use the product
and, if necessary, use appropriate accessories or another product.
If using with two carers, follow the steps above. The second person can then assist the service user as required.
A safe transfer distance (from point A to point B) should be determined during your risk assessment.
We recommend that you do not transfer a person over a raised threshold or on uneven surfaces.
It is recommended that a ladder belt or harness is used for all transfers between point A and point B.
9. When the user is standing, attach the ladder strap to the strap anchor on the other side or to the centre upright when using
the harness.
10. Release the brake pedal with one foot.
11. Check the environment and safely manoeuvre the patient transfer aid to point B. The transfer from point A to point B is
best achieved when the service user is facing in the direction of travel.
12. Apply the brake
13. Check the environment again and prepare for a safe transfer, standing up to sit down.
14. With the maintenance user clinging to the frame, unhook the belt or harness from the ladder.
15. Ask the service user to sit down safely. When facilitating a transfer using the ladder belt, ensure that you are in a stable
and secure starting position, with your near hand firmly gripping the frame. Encourage the service user to start sitting up with
gradual assistance. It may be helpful for the carer to step forward in unison as the service user lowers themselves into a sitting
position. Continue to provide the necessary level of support through the ladder belt during the transfer.
NB: Remember that a counterweight must be applied at each stage of the transfer. Your method of applying counterbalance
may vary, for example using the ladder belt, placing a foot on the footrest and reinforcing the frame, or supporting the
