3.1 Soxtec 2050 Extraction Unit
Solvent extraction in the Extraction Unit is performed in two steps. First the sample
is immersed in the boiling solvent to dissolve most of the soluble material. In the sec-
ond step the sample is raised above the solvent surface to permit efficient washing
with solvent from the condensers.
After extraction the condenser valves are closed by lifting the samples to the upper
position. After some minutes most of the solvent is collected via the condenser into
a collection vessel. The last residues of solvent are evaporated when the air pump is
started.
3.2 Soxtec 2050 Control Unit
The Control Unit is connected to the mains power supply. It controls the temperature
of the hot plate and has timer functions for the various steps in the extraction proce-
dure. The Control Unit also controls the positioning of the sample thimbles and
opening/closing of valves for solvent recovery via a Drive Unit. The Control Unit is
also equipped with an air pump for evaporation of the last traces of solvent from the
extraction cups.
3.3 Soxtec 2050 Drive Unit
The Drive Unit is connected to the mains power supply. It has a communication cable
connected from the 2050 Control Unit and is connected to the 2050 Extraction Unit
by wires for motion control and water tubes for cooling water control.
