Starting the engine
- Connect the spark plug wire to the spark plug. Make sure that the metal cap on the end of the spark
plug wire is securely over the metal tip of the spark plug.
- Turn the fuel valve to the ON position.
- Move the choke lever to the CHOKE position.
- Slide the throttle control lever about one-third to the FAST position.
- Turn the engine switch to the ON position.
- Grasp the starter handle and pull the rope slowly until the engine reaches the start of the compression
cycle (the rope will pull a little harder at this point).
- Pull the rope with a quick, full arm movement. Grasp the starter grip firmly. Allow the rope to wind up
slowly. Repeat until the engine starts.
- After the engine starts, move the choke lever to the OFF position. Set the throttle lever to the desired
speed. For best performance, the engine is designed to operate in the FAST throttle position.
- In cold weather, raise or lower the wedge 6 to 8 times to circulate the hydraulic fluid.
WARNING: When starting a hot engine, the muffler and surrounding areas are hot and can cause
burns. Do not touch.
Stopping the engine
- Turn the engine switch to the OFF position.
- Close the fuel valve.
- Disconnect the spark plug wire and ground it against the engine to prevent accidental starting.
Using the log splitter
- Place the log splitter on level, dry ground.
- Place the beam in an upright position and lock it in place with the appropriate locking bar.
- Lock the front and rear of both wheels.
- Place the log against the end plate and split the wood in the direction of the grain only.
- Never place your hand on the end between the log and the splitting wedge.
- Only an adult should operate the control lever so that the operator has full control over the log and
splitting wedge.
Operational advice
Always:
1. Use clean fluid and check the fluid level regularly.
2. Use 10W AW hydraulic fluid.
3. Use a filter (clean or replace it regularly).
4. Use a breather cap on the fluid reservoir.
5. Make sure that the pump is mounted and aligned correctly.
6. Use a flexible "spider" type coupling between the motor and pump drive shafts.
7. Keep the hoses clear and free of obstructions.
8. Bleed air from the hoses before operating them.
9. Flush and clean the hydraulic system before restarting after an overhaul.
10. Use "pipe dope" on all hydraulic fittings.
11. Allow time for warm-up before splitting timber.
12. Prime the pump before initial start by turning the engine with the spark plug disconnected.
13. Split wood only along the grain (lengthwise).
