Notes on Safety
The AF1 has been manufactured according to the accepted rules of safety and current
technology. There is, however, still a danger of personal injury or damage to equipment if the
following general safety instructions and the warnings before the steps contained in these
instructions are not complied with.
O
Read these instructions completely before working with the AF1.
O
Keep these instructions in a location where they are accessible to all users at all times.
O
Always include the operating instructions when you pass the AF1 on to third parties.
Intended use
O
Only use the AF1 to measure the flow of compressed air and gaseous nitrogen for industrial
applications in accordance with the technical information.
O
Observe the performance limits listed in the technical data.
O
The device is designed to be installed in AS series maintenance units or to be fitted as a
stand-alone device using mounting brackets.
Intended use includes having read and understood these instructions completely, especially
chapter "Notes on Safety".
Improper use
It is considered improper use if the AF1
W
is used in hydraulic systems or comes into contact with aggressive/explosive/flammable/
poisonous gases or liquids,
W
any modifications are made to the device,
W
or is used for accounting purposes in business dealings, for example measuring air
consumption in supply equipment.
Personnel qualifications
Assembly, disassembly, commissioning, and operation of the AF1 require basic electrical and
pneumatic knowledge, as well as knowledge of the appropriate technical terms. Assembly,
disassembly, commissioning, and operation may therefore only be carried out by qualified
electrical or pneumatic personnel or an instructed person under the direction and supervision of
qualified personnel.
Qualified personnel are those who can recognize possible hazards and institute the appropriate
safety measures, due to their professional training, knowledge, and experience, as well as their
understanding of the relevant conditions pertaining to the work to be done. Qualified personnel
must observe the rules relevant to the subject area.
General safety instructions
W
Observe the regulations for safety, accident prevention and environmental protection for the
country where the device is used and at the workplace.
W
Do not change or modify the AF1. The manufacturer can accept no liability claims if these
instructions are not complied with or the device is interfered with; the warranty for
appliances and accessory parts will no longer apply.
W
All settings on the AF1, all assembly and disassembly work, and commissioning may only be
performed by trained personnel.
W
Do not loosen any connecting cables or hoses if systems are under voltage or pressure!
W
Do not place any deflection, torsion, or impact loads on the AF1.
W
Make sure that the stipulated air quality class for the flow medium is observed. Any
impurities in the compressed air can damage the device and lead to inaccurate
measurements and functional defects. Furthermore, unintended signals may result in
personal injury or damage to equipment.
W
Flow measurement in the AF1 only works properly when AVENTICS connecting cables
(series CN2 - M12x1) are used (see online catalog).
During assembly and commissioning
W
Always make sure the relevant system part is not under pressure or voltage before
assembling or disassembling the AF1.
W
Make sure that the connected compressed air lines are free of particles and that no liquids
can penetrate the device through them.
W
Do not install any obviously damaged devices and exchange defective devices immediately.
W
Check if the device measurement range (up to 2000 l/min or 5000 l/min) corresponds to the
maximum flow at the intended place of installation.
During operation
W
Immediately exchange the AF1 if any malfunctions occur.
W
Make sure that permitted temperature and pressure levels are not exceeded.

About This Product

Product description

The AF1 flow rate sensor is used as a switch in electric signal, control and regulation circuits.
The AF1 operates as a differential pressure flow rate sensor up to 16 bar of operating pressure.
The device is available for two flow rates (up to 2000 l/min and up to 5000 l/min). The sensor is
fitted with two measuring points: one for input pressure and one for output pressure. The
differential pressure shield is located between the two measuring points. The flow rates are
determined using the difference in pressure between the two measuring points and shown on
the display. A number of options are available for the display. The AF1 has two switch outputs
and one analog output. Switching points for the two switch outputs are set on the basis of flow
rate, volume or pressure. The analog output provides the flow rate value.
Refer to Fig.
1
for the dimensions of the AF1.
5
Assembly
Danger of injury from uncontrolled operation
If the system is under electrical voltage and/or pressure during assembly of the AF1, this may
lead to uncontrolled responses and, as a result, to injuries to personnel or damage to the
system.
O
Always make sure the relevant system component is not under pressure or voltage before
connecting pneumatics or electrics for the AF1.
Do not install the AF1 directly behind a regulator/filter regulator as this may result in
deviations in measurement values.
Assembly options
W
Assembly in maintenance unit (W04)
W
Combination with other sizes (W07)
W
Assembly with mounting bracket (W01)
W
Assembly with block assembly kit (W05)
The required accessories can be found in our online catalog at
www.aventics.com/pneumatics-catalog.
Connecting the compressed air
O
Comply with the limits for pressure and temperature (see "Technical Data").
O
Observe the flow direction when connecting the device (input left, output right).
1. Install the AF1 observing the flow direction and connect the AF1 to the maintenance unit or
to the block assembly kit appropriate for the cable (see
2. When combining with other sizes (see
of the AF1 so that it is also in the groove of the connection plate.
3. Assemble the device combinations or the AF1 with a block assembly kit or a mounting
bracket. Make sure that fitted elements are properly sealed.
4. Next, apply pressure to the section of tubing and check for possible leaks and any functional
defects.
Connecting the AF1 electrically
The AF1 has a 5-pin M12x1 connection on the top (see
O
Only operate the AF1 via a power pack with safe isolation from the power supply
(PELV in acc. with DIN VDE 0100-410, IEC 60364-4-41: 2005, HD 60364.4.41,
EN 60079-14). The electrical circuit must be potential-free (not grounded).
O
Use AVENTICS connecting cables (series CN2 - M12x1) to connect the AF1
(max. length 5 m).
O
Carefully assemble the CN2 - M12x1 round plug connector to ensure the IP 65 protection
class.
If the connection is not used, it has to be covered with a suitable cap in order to maintain the
IP 65 protection class of the housing.

O
Observe the pin assignment (
, Tab. 1).
O
The AF1 has two switch outputs and one analog output. The switch outputs at contact points
2 and 4 can be used as PNP or NPN types and wired accordingly (see also "Configuring the
digital outputs")
O
Use shielded cables if the AF1 is exposed to strong electromagnetic fields.
