4.2 Effect unit
For processing the master signal, it will be pos-
sible to connect an effect unit via the two unbal-
anced 6.3 mm jacks EFFECT LOOP (23):
1) Connect the input of the effect unit to the out-
put SEND.
2) Connect the output of the effect unit to the
input RETURN.
Note: The signal in the powered mixer will be inter-
rupted if only one of the two jacks is connected or if the
effect unit connected is not switched on, if it is defective
or if it is not correctly connected. In this case, no sound
will be reproduced via the speaker/speakers.
4.3 Recorder or additional amplifier
The RCA jacks TAPE REC (10) allow connection
of a stereo recorder or of another stereo unit with
line input (e. g. an additional amplifier). At these
jacks, the mixed signal of the audio sources will
be available, unaffected by the adjustments of an
effect unit connected (
chapter 4.2), the 5-band
equalizer (7) and the control MASTER (14).
4.4 Headphones
To monitor the master signal, connect head-
phones to the 6.3 mm jack (9).
4.5 Speakers
Connect the speaker/speakers to the mono out-
put of the power amplifier (22): two 6.3 mm jacks
connected in parallel. The total impedance of the
speakers connected must be 4 Ω as a minimum.
– When connecting a single speaker, connect it
to one of the two jacks (SPEAKER 1 or
SPEAKER 2). The minimum impedance of the
speaker must be 4 Ω.
– When connecting two speakers in parallel,
connect one speaker to the jack SPEAKER 1
and the other speaker to the jack SPEAKER 2.
In this case, the minimum impedance of each
speaker must be 8 Ω.
4.6 Power supply
Finally connect the mains cable provided to the
mains jack (21), then connect the plug to a mains
socket (230 V~ / 50 Hz).
5 Setting the Powered Mixer
into Operation
1) Prior to switching on, set the control MAS-
TER (14) to "0" to prevent switching noise
and excessive volume.
2) Depending on the type of microphone con-
nected, either engage or disengage the button
PHANTOM POWER (13) [see chapter 4.1].
3) Switch on the audio sources connected first,
then switch on the PMX-160 with the
POWER switch (19). The LED POWER ON
(12) will light up. If an additional power ampli-
fier for PA application has been connected to
the PMX-160, switch it on last.
After operation, switch off the units in
reverse order:
1. the additional power amplifier
2. the PMX-160
3. the audio sources connected
6 Operation
CAUTION Never adjust the headphones or
the speakers to a very high volume.
Permanent high volumes may
damage your hearing! The human
ear will get accustomed to high vol-
umes which do not seem to be that
high after some time. Therefore, do
not further increase a high volume
after getting used to it.
6.1 Mixing input signals or
fading input signals in /out
The following operating steps merely serve as
an aid; other procedures will also be possible.
1) For basic setting, first set all controls GAIN
(5), the control CD / TAPE (6) and the control
EFFECT (15) to the left stop and set all tone
controls of the channels (4) and the controls
of the 5-band equalizer (7) to mid-position.
2) Set the control MASTER (14) for the overall
volume approximately to mid-position so that
all further adjustments will be reproduced via
the speaker / speakers.
3) Mix the input signals with the corresponding
volume controls [controls GAIN (5) for the
audio sources connected to the channels
1 – 6, control CD / TAPE (6) for the unit con-
nected to the CD INPUT (18)] or fade them in
and out as desired.
If an audio source is not used, always turn
back its volume control to zero.
4) Adjust the sound for each input channel sep-
arately with the tone controls (4): TREBLE for
the high frequencies and BASS for the low
frequencies
5) With the control MASTER (14), adjust the
definitive volume of the master signal which
is fed to the speaker output and correct the
sound of the master signal with the 5-band
equalizer (7). The equalizer will mainly com-
pensate for poor room acoustics or suppress
feedback by attenuating certain frequencies.
The level of the master signal will be dis-
played on the LED level indication (11).
6) If headphones are connected, adjust the head-
phone volume with the control PHONES (8).
6.2 Adding an echo effect
An echo effect may be added to the signal of
each input channel 1 – 6. This echo effect will be
created by a digital delay circuit: The signal will
be stored and, with a delay, added to the original
signal.
1) With the controls EFFECT (2), adjust the sig-
nal part to be fed to the internal effect proces-
sor for each channel. The further the control
is advanced, the more intense the effect for
the channel. If no effect is to be added to a
channel, set its EFFECT control to "0".
2) Adjust the overall volume of the echo effect
with the control EFFECT (15).
3) Adjust the desired sound of the echo effect:
The control ECHO (16) will change the num-
ber of echo repeats; the control DELAY (17)
will change the delay time.
