Salbutamol (Albuterol) is an endothelium-dependent vasodilator.
The reduction of RI following Salbutamol administration will depend
on endothelial function.
To assure the best measurement quality, subjects should be studied
in the morning after a light breakfast having abstained from, or at
least avoided, excessive exercise/caffeine/alcohol/smoking for the
preceding 24 hours.
Subjects should rest preferably supine for at least 15 min's before
the endothelial protocol is to be started.
CareFusion recommends the following protocol:
Three baseline spot check measurements over a 10-minute
•
period.
Sublingual GTN for 3 min, and PCA measurements 5, 10, 15
•
and 20min after GTN administration. After 20 min, RI and SI
should be back to baseline measurements (this is optional).
Salbutmol administration (typically 4*100µg inhaler puffs
•
through a spacer device) and PCA measurements 5, 10 and
15 min after salbutamol.
The mean changes from baseline can then be calculated:
∆RI (SLB) = Mean of baseline RI – Mean of post salbutamol RI
