Installation instructions
The propeller shaft seal is only intended for fitting below
the water line since it must be lubricated with water.
Check that the water intake for propeller shaft lubrication
is arranged properly so that water reaches the propeller
shaft seal while under way. It is especially important that
water is taken in via the sleeve tube using e.g. angled
inlet ends on the intake tubes (see fig. 2) on fast boats or
with large seals, to ensure that sufficient water is avail-
able for lubrication.
There must be at least 36 mm free length of the propeller
shaft tube available in order to mount the seal. See item
(A) in fig. 1. It is recommended that a groove is machined
on the outer part of the tube to guarantee the attachment
of the rubber seal.
The maximum distance between the propeller shaft
bearings may not exceed 1.5 m, see item (B) in figs. 3
and 4. If the distance "B" exceeds 1.5 m, a support bear-
ing must be fitted. It should be fitted so that the shaft ro-
tates easily and without bending.
Installation and maintenance should be performed as
follows:
1.
Check that the part of the shaft that rotates within the
seal has a fine surface finish (free from scratches and
burrs).
2.
Check that the end of the shaft is free from burrs and
beveled, so that the sensitive seal edges are not dam-
aged during installation.
3.
Fit the clamp into the rubber seal, see fig. 5.
4.
Apply a little grease to the inside of the seal to ease as-
sembly of the mounting sleeve (4). Now fit the sleeve
into the rubber seal (see fig. 5).
5.
Make a temporary attachment to the engine and check
that the propeller shaft centers in the propeller shaft
tube.
Important! The shaft must be centered, otherwise
the rubber seal will not function correctly.
Disconnect the propeller shaft again.

6.
Carefully clean the part of the tube where the seal is to
be fitted and the corresponding surface of the rubber
seal.
Important! In order for the seal to attach properly to
the tube, all traces of grease must be removed.
7.
Carefully push the seal onto the propeller shaft, fit the
drive flange and attach it to the engine, see fig. 6.
8.
Now push the seal aft along the propeller shaft, see fig.
7. Fit the seal to the propeller shaft tube. To prevent the
clamp (2) from pinching the seal during tightening, fit the
small plate (3) under the clamp so that it covers the
opening in the clamp, see fig. 8. As an additional pre-
caution to prevent the clamp from moving the seal out of
alignment, lubricate the outside of the seal beneath the
clamp with moist soap or similar. Tighten the seal in
place with the clamp.
Important! The clamp must be tightened complete-
ly closed with the screws.
9.
Remove the mounting sleeve (4). Carefully extract the
sleeve from the seal so that the sensitive edges are not
damaged. Remove the sleeve from the propeller shaft,
see fig. 9.
Warning! It is extremely important that the fitting
sleeve is removed, otherwise the boat may fill with
water upon launching.
10.
Press in about 1 cm
3
of water resistant grease from the
included tube, see item (7) in fig. 10. Make sure that the
amount of grease is not excessive. It is important that
lips of the seal are not pressed away from the shaft, oth-
erwise the seal will cease to function.
11.
The seal shall be lubricated after every 200 operating
hours or once a year. Press in about 1 cm
each occasion.
Important! The seal shall be replaced after 500
operating hours or at least every fifth year.
After launching:
12.
Remove the air from the propeller shaft tube as follows:
The propeller shaft seal is purged from air by pressing
the seal edges together and against the propeller shaft
(8). This pressure creates a slight gap between the seal
and the shaft (9). When water seeps out of the gap. the
seal is purged, see fig. 11.
