Safety Instructions and Guidelines
Safety instructions and guidelines for the use of power-operated clamping
devices are described below.
1.1

Qualification of the Operator

Persons without experience of operating clamping fixtures are exposed to in-
creased risks of injury in the event of incorrect conduct, especially during
commissioning and set-up work, due to the clamping movements and forces
which occur. Therefore, clamping fixtures may only be used, set up or re-
paired by persons who have received special training or instruction for this
purpose or who have extensive experience. After installing the chuck and be-
fore commissioning, the function of the chuck must be checked.
Two important points are:
▪ clamping force: with max. actuating force / pressure, the clamping force
specified for the clamping device (+15 %) must be achieved;
▪ stroke control: a safety range must be provided for the stroke of the
clamping piston in the front and rear end position. The machine spindle
may only start after the clamping piston has crossed the safety range.
Only limit switches meeting the requirements for safety limit switches in
accordance with VDE 0113 / 12.73 section 7.1.3 may be used for monitor-
ing the clamping path.
1.2

Risk of Injuries

For technical reasons, this assembly may sometimes consist of sharp edges.
To prevent risk of injuries, special care is to be taken when working on it!
1.2.1

Built-In Energy Storage

Moving parts pre-loaded with pressure, tensile or other springs or with other
elastic elements represent a potential risk due to the energy stored within
them. Underestimating this may lead to serious injuries due to uncontrollable,
fast flying parts. This stored energy must be released before carrying out fur-
ther work. Clamping equipment to be dismantled is therefore to be inspected
with the aid of corresponding assembly drawings for such sources of risks.
If "alleviation" of this stored energy is not without risk, disassembly must be
carried out by authorised employees of RÖHM GmbH.
