Use of Other / Further Clamping Sets / Workpieces

The Directive VDI 3106 - Calculation of the permissible speed of lathe chucks
(jaw chucks) is always to be applied when using clamping inserts or work-
pieces. See also Reference Speed and Clamping Force Calculation
[} 39].
a) Use of other / further clamping inserts
If clamping inserts are used which differ from those intended for this
clamping device, it must be excluded that the chuck is operated at too
high a speed and therefore with excessive centrifugal forces. Otherwise
there is a risk that the workpiece is not sufficiently clamped. Therefore,
the chuck manufacturer or the individual designer must always be consul-
ted.
b) Danger due to flying parts
In order to protect the operator from flying parts, a safety guard must be
fitted to the machine in accordance with DIN EN ISO 23125. Its resistance
is specified in so-called resistance classes. If new clamping sets are put
into operation on the machine, the admissibility is to be checked before-
hand. This also includes clamping sets or clamping set parts produced by
the user. The admissibility is influenced by the resistance class of the
safety guard, the masses of any flying parts (defined by calculation or
weighing), the maximum possible chuck diameter (measure) and the ma-
ximum achievable speed of the machine. In order to reduce the possible
impact energy to the admissible size, the admissible masses and speeds
must be defined (e.g. by consulting the machine manufacturer) and if ne-
cessary the maximum speed of the machine restricted. However, the
clamping set parts (e.g. top jaws, workpiece supports, axial clamps etc.)
are always to be designed as light as possible.
c) Clamping of other / further workpieces
If special clamping sets (jaws, clamping inserts, systems, aligning ele-
ments, position fixing elements, centres etc.) are intended for this clamp-
ing device, these may only be clamped with workpieces in the way for
which the clamping sets were designed. If this is not observed, damage to
property and personal injuries may occur due to insufficient clamping
forces or unfavourable clamping point positioning. Therefore, if further or
similar workpieces are to be clamped with the same clamping set, the
written permission of the manufacturer is required.
