Environmental Hazards

1. Substances
When operating a clamping device, many different media are sometimes re-
quired for lubrication, cooling etc. All operating materials are generally fed in
internally via the actuating element or externally. When using the clamping
device, these media must be handled with care to prevent them entering the
environment; Caution, environmental hazard!
This applies in particular
▪ during assembly or disassembly as there may be residual quantities of
media in the pipelines, piston chambers or oil discharge screws,
▪ to porous, defective or incorrectly installed seals,
▪ to operating materials which escape, are ejected or flushed out of the
clamping device during operation for reasons of design.
These escaping substances must therefore be collected and re-used or dis-
posed of in accordance with the relevant regulations!
2. Noise
It cannot be excluded that operation of rotating assemblies gives rise to noise
emissions. Generally, these can be detected for the first time during start-up.
If these emissions cannot be eliminated by design measures on the clamping
device or manufacturing measures, the manufacturer or operator of the ma-
chine must equip the machine with suitable sound insulation, if necessary.

Safety Requirements for Power-Operated Clamping Devices

a) The machine spindle may only start when the clamping pressure has been
built up in the actuating cylinder and the clamping has been carried out in
the permissible working area.
b) Unclamping may only be carried out when the machine spindle has com-
pletely stopped. An exception to this is permitted if the complete process
involves loading / unloading while running and if the design of the dis-
tributor / cylinder allows it.
c) In the event of a clamping energy failure, the machine spindle must be
stopped immediately by a signal.
d) In the event of a clamping energy failure, the workpiece must be firmly
clamped until the spindle is completely stopped.
e) In the event of a power failure and on subsequent return of power, the
current switch position must not be changed.
