General safety notes
For the installation of add-on carrying equipment (e.g. sports and
luggage container, ski rack), please observe the respective installation
instructions.
Take note of the change in the vehicle dimensions when the basic carrier
bars are installed.
For safety reasons, and in order to save fuel, the basic carrier bars should
be removed from the vehicle when not in use.
Do not enter an automatic car wash when the basic carrier bars are fitted
to the vehicle.
Installation
Installation is shown at the rear basic carrier bar on the M-Class by way
of example. The installation of the front basic carrier bar on the M-Class
and the basic carrier bars on the GL-Class and on the GLK should be
performed in the same manner.
The front basic carrier bar of the X-Class is installed directly behind the
front foot of the roof rail.
Have a second person assist you with the installation.
1. Open covers (7) on both sides with key (3) and fold upwards.
2. Slowly fold quick-tightening device (8) downwards until you feel it
engage.
Important
Do not touch the vehicle roof with the quick-release device. You
could otherwise scratch or damage the paintwork.
3. Turn quick-tightening device (8) anti-clockwise as far as it will go.

Important
When add-on carrying equipment is installed (e.g. roofbox, ski
rack), depending on the vehicle equipment, make sure that:
the sliding sunroof can be fully raised
the panorama sliding sunroof can be fully opened
the tailgate can be fully opened.
Adjust the positioning of basic carrier bars if necessary.
4. Except X-Class: Position basic carrier bars (2) in a form-locking
manner, approx. 0.4 inch (1 cm) in front of or behind the center foot

of the roof rails.
5. For X-Class: Position basic carrier bars (2) in a form-locking manner,
directly in front of the rear foot of the roof rails.
6. Turn quick-tightening device (8) clockwise until you feel and hear it
engage and it is horizontal.
7. Fold quick-tightening device (8) upwards as far as it will go. Clamping
claw (9) and pads (10) must be positioned on the roof rails.
8. Fold down covers (7) on both sides and lock them with key (3).
1. On M-Class vehicles and on the GLK, position basic carrier bars (2) in front of
the center foot of the roof rails. For GL-Class vehicles, position basic carrier
bars (2) behind the center foot of the roof rails.
