9. Fit the front basic carrier bars at distance (X)

WARNING
Check that the basic carrier bars are securely attached before every
journey and also during long journeys. Retighten the quick-release
devices if necessary. Repeat these checks at regular intervals,
regardless of road surface conditions and at the latest after
1550 miles (2500 km) of continuous use.
Do not use damaged or defective basic carrier bars or add-on carrying
equipment. The basic carrier bars could come loose from your vehicle,
together with the add-on carrying equipment, thereby injuring you and
other persons and/or causing material damage, including to your
vehicle.
Mounting add-on carrying equipment
1. Unlock cover caps (7) on the basic carrier bars (1 and 2) with key (3)
and fold them downwards.

Important
Do not subject covers which have been folded down to any loads.
This may damage the cover caps or cause them to break.
2. Push the bracket of the add-on carrying equipment into slot (11).
Further information can be found in the installation instructions of the
respective add-on carrying equipment.
Installing the cover profile
If no add-on carrying equipment is used, the cover profile should be
installed in order to minimise wind noise.
1. Cut cover profile (4) to size:
M-Class, W 166

2. Place cover profile (4) on the basic carrier bar and push it into
slot (11).
Removing
1. Open covers (7) on both sides with key (3) and fold upwards.
2. Slowly fold quick-tightening device (8) downwards until you feel it
engage.
Important
Do not touch the vehicle roof with the quick-release device. You
could otherwise scratch or damage the paintwork.
3. Turn quick-tightening device (8) anti-clockwise as far as it will go.
4. Remove basic carrier bars (1 and 2) from the roof rails.
5. Turn quick-tightening device (8) clockwise by approx. 15 revolutions.
6. Position quick-tightening device (8) horizontally and fold it upwards.
7. Fold down covers (7) on both sides and lock them with key (3).
Note
Store the basic carrier bars in a clean and safe place. Mercedes-Benz
recommends you use the transport and stowage bag for basic carrier
bars or basic carrier bars for rails.
