8.5 GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The dryer is an electric motor driven, hermetically sealed refrigeration
system, complete with all necessary components piped, wired and
baseplate mounted. It is a totally self contained compressed air dryer
package.
The standard dryer is designed to operate in an ambient range of 2_C
to 46_C (35_F to 115_F). For air–cooled machines, the standard
maximum temperature of 46_C (115_F) is applicable up to an elevation
of 1,000m (3,280ft) above sea level. Above this altitude, significant
reductions in ambient temperature are required if the standard fan
motor is to be used.
The dryer is managed by an onboard electronic controller. The
controller operates and provides functions to optimize the dryer
operation. Panel instrumentation provides indication of the dryer
operating status.

As hot saturated compressed air is supplied to the dryer inlet, the air
is conditioned inside a patented aluminum combination evaporator /
cooler / water separator module. Upon entry to the dryer, air passes
through a cross flow air–to–air heat exchanger where it is pre–cooled.
The air then enters the cross flow refrigerant–to–air evaporator where
it is cooled to its lowest temperature and water vapor is condensed to
liquid. The next stage passes the air through a stainless steel mesh
coalescer where condenser water is conglomerated into large, heavy
drops. The air exits the coalescer where it turns and rises while the
water drops out into a drain well. The cold dried air proceeds on to enter
the initial air–to–air heat exchanger where it is heated up to greatly
reduce its relative humidity, providing high quality dried air back into the
compressed air system.
