2.- INSTALLATION

The MTS 100 field meter is designed for use as portable or desktop equipment. A carrying case is
supplied to simplify transport and to allow the user to take measurements conveniently during the installation of
the antenna. It is convenient to remove the instrument from the carrier case when using as desktop equipment
to facilitate the equipment ventilation.

2.1.- Power Supply

The MTS 100 is a portable instrument powered by a 12 volt internal battery or through the main power
supply. If the battery is low, the LOW BATT [9] signal will remain lit for a battery voltage lower than 11.4 V.
If the battery is very low, the cut-off circuit will prevent the instrument from functioning. In such a situa-
tion the battery must be recharged immediately.

2.1.1.- Operating on the mains supply

The device was designed for use as portable equipment and operate connected to the mains power
supply.
Connect the instrument to the mains and press the start switch
LINE [8] will ligh on.
The instrument can be powered by mains voltages of 95 to 250 V AC 50-60 Hz without
a voltage selector. For user safety, it is equipped with a semi-slow 2.5 A fuse, located
next to the mains base.

2.1.2.- Operating on the battery

For the instrument to operate on the battery, just disconnect the power cable and press the start
switch POWER [6]. The fully charged battery can power the equipment for approximately two to three hours
of non-stop operation. When the LOW BATT [9] indicator lights up, the battery must be recharged immediately.

2.1.2.1- Charging the battery

To recharge the battery, connect the instrument to the mains supply. The length of time it takes to
recharge depends on the condition of the battery. If it is very low (the LOW BATT [9] indicator is lit) the rechar-
ging time is 7 hours. The indicator light LINE [8] should remain lit.
IMPORTANT
The battery charge must always exceed the minimum cut-off charge.
To ensure the best results, the lead battery in the instrument must always be fully charged. If
the equipment has been in storage or used only occasionally for a long period of time, it is ABSOLU-
TELY NECESSARY to check the full-charge functions periodically (every six months, for example), in
order to compensate for the self-discharging effect of the battery. The rate at which a fully charged bat-
tery self-discharges depends on the temperature. For example, at an ambient temperature of 20 ºC, the
battery undergoes a 50% loss after 16 months and at 40 ºC it loses the same charge in only 5 months
(these data may vary among the battery manufacturers). If the battery remains very low for a period of
4 weeks or more, it will not accept recharging since the plates are sulphated and must be replaced.
