rence will be displayed with a max. amplitude near the right edge of the screen.
Select the FULL SPAN mode by pressing the SPECT [12] key, leaving the SPAN [4] control in its origi-
nal position; the frequency spectrum analysis takes place in the entire band selected. A black horizontal line or
marker representing the present tuning frequency appears on the screen. As the user moves the
TUNE/SELECT [13] control, the marker will move through the entire spectrum, allowing an approximate pre-
tuning of the frequency corresponding to the lobe that coincides with the marker.
Select the variable SPAN function by pressing the SPECT [12] key and pulling out the SPAN [4] con-
trol. The frequency spectrum analysis is conducted in the proximity of the tuning frequency. The range contro-
lled by the SPAN [4] control varies from about 1/3 of the band to zero SPAN.
By choosing a specific SPAN and varying the tuning with the TUNE/SELECT [13] control, the user can
slowly sweep the entire band of the selected frequencies.
By pressing the TV [10] key or the SYNC [11] key, the instrument returns to normal functioning. The
frequency tuned is shown on the monitor and the display indicates the value of the frequency in the cursor
position and the level measured in each point.
In the spectrum analyzer mode SPECT, the display [29] of the level and the tuning frequency is deacti-
vated. The display of the band and the reference level is activated. The reference level changes in accord with
the attenuators selected.
One of the applications of the MTS 100 operating as a spectrum analyzer is the search for the best
orientation and position of the receiving antenna in SAT and TV. By pulling out the volume control
audible indicator is selected, whose tone varies depending on the signal received, being sharper when the
level is higher. This facilitates the optimal orientation of the antenna with no need for looking at the measure-
ment level.

3.2.3.- Operating in SYNC mode

With the SYNC [11] control pressed:
With the SYNC function the user can analyze the amplitude and quality of the line synchronizing pulse
of a television broadcast. This allows the optimum orientation of the antenna, rejecting indirect reception
beams that cause an unwanted double image. It also detects any possible antenna amplifier saturation caused
by a signal excess, as well as any faulty adjustment of the bandwidth through absence of chroma in the burst
amplitude. The latter may cause faulty reception, not through lack of level but through poor signal quality,
which will result in synchronism difficulty in the first case and in noise or loss of colour in the second case.

3.3.- Measurement

To take a measurement within a specified accuracy, the MTS 100 field meter requires a warm-up
period of more than five minutes.
The first step in installing a master antenna is to measure the field intensity value in the place where
the antenna is to be installed. This value can be calculated by using an antenna with established characteris-
tics.
Follow the procedure explained below to measure the value of the signal received:
-
Press the start/stop control
light up, indicating that the instrument is very close to automatic cut-off.
-
Select the frequency to be measured using the TUNE/SELECT [13], the SEL [34], or the SAT/TV
[37] controls.
-
To read the signal level, proceed as follows: Read the level on the display [29]. If the level is so
strong that the > sign appears, press the IF ATT 20 dB [16] attenuator until the reading is within the measure-
POWER [6]. If the battery is low, the LOW BATT [9] indicator will
