Mars series chargers can charge all types of batteries commonly available
on the market depending on their construction technology and the user's
needs. They also are equipped with a 'Power Supply' function that allows
the charger to be used as a stabilised power supply unit.
Each Polar Mars Series charger model is personalisable according to the
user's needs by modifying three parameters:
nominal battery voltage, current, battery type
Setting the charger is done via the touch buttons on the charger's display.
To see the battery charge's settings see the chapter "Operations - commands
and displays".
Depending on the type of battery set, the charge curve will reach different
charge voltages. Refer to the following list to make sure the charger is set
correctly for the battery you are charging:
WET: Free lead acid - End of charge voltage: 2.4V / element
e
WET DEEP: Free lead acid with deep charge end of charge: 2.65V / element
e
GEL: Lead-acid with electrolyte in gel form
End of charge voltage: 2.35V / element
e
AGM1: Lead-acid with electrolyte absorbed by glass microfiber
End of charge voltage: 2.38V / element
The charging process is divided into 5 phases, see fig.B pag. 3:
a
1 - Analysis. When the battery is connected, the charger performs an analysis.
e
2 - Bulk. Constant current initial charge phase.
e
3 - Absorption + Final. Constant voltage charging phase in which the current
absorbed by the battery drops.
e
4 - Conditioning + Final. Optional deep charge stage. (WET DEEP only)
a
e
5 - Floating: Final charge phase, the charger acts as a charge maintainer
for the entire time it is connected to the battery, bringing the voltage up to
2.25V per cell to avoid self-discharge over time.
