14.Special safety precautions

Description of the specific hazards of the
machine
So that the hazards may occur, any of the prior
hazard conditions must be given:
1. The operator has does not have adequate
training.
2. The miter saw has not been installed
adequately.
3. The miter saw has not been serviced correctly.
4. The miter saw has been disassembled and
incorrectly reassembled.
5. The miter saw has been disassembled and
reassembled with parts lacking.
6. The operator does not use the protection as
indicated.
7. The operator holds the work piece with his/her
hand.
8. The operator exposes his/her hands, body or
clothing to the cutting path.
The two main kinds of hazards involved by the use
of this machine are contact with the cutting disk and
projection of cut particles or pieces.
1. Contac whit the cutting disk
Case of use 1.1 During performance of the
cutting operations
Description of an accident of type 1.1.1: The
appearance of a knot in the wood that changes the
resistance to penetration, causes an abrupt shake
in the work piece and thus the possibility that the
hand of the operator who holds it precipitates
towards the disks and gets into contact therewith if it
remains accessible.
Description of an accident of type 1.1.2: It happens
during the cutting of end grains into pieces of very
short lengths held by hand. When the disk
penetrates into the work piece, this latter may fall
into the penetration slit of the disk in the cutting table
and thus drag the hand that holds it which thereby
enters into contact with the disk if it remains
accessible. .
Case of use 1.2 Fortuitous contacts with the
disk running idle in the resting position
Description of an accident of type 1.2.1: It happens
with a machine that has been manipulated or

lacking guards. In these conditions, the actuator
element remains locked such that the operator
keeps rotating the disk running idle in the resting
position and with the disk being accessible. At the
same time, the operator's hand gets into contact
with the cutting disk while he/she is carrying out
operations in areas close to the disk (e.g. removing
the cut piece, placing the new work piece on the
table, etc.).
Case of use 1.3 Abrupt downfall of the disk due
to breakage of the fastening spring in the
resting position
Description of an accident of type 1.3: Due to
breakage of one or both counterweights or the
anchorage thereof, there occurs a loss of the
counterweight of the movable head that holds the
cutting disk. At the same time, the disk keeps on
rotating running idle. At the same time, the operator
has his/her hands below the cutting path. In these
conditions, the disk reaches the hands of the
operator who at that moment is carrying operations
in that area.
2. Projection of the cut piece
Case of use 2.1: Violent kickback of the work piece
with projection thereof against the operator.
Description of an accident of type 2.1: This hazard
appears in cutting operations with the upper table. It
requires the wood to contain nails or knots or that
the separating keel does not comply with the
adjustment conditions or that the machine is in an
unusable state due that the keel has been removed.
In these conditions the work piece may leap being
violently shot against the operator.
Case of use 2.2. Abrupt downfall of the disk due to
breakage of the fastening spring in the resting
position.
Description of an accident of type 2.2: This hazard
appears in operations on short work pieces with fix
stops. When finishing the cut and lifting the disk, the
left-over piece stuck between the stop and the disk
may be dragged by this latter and violently
projected and even in the worst case lead to
breakage of the disk.
