Maintaining the Plant

The plant must be ready to use at all times. As a small-scale sewage treatment plant owner/operator, you
are required to ensure the plant runs seamlessly. Almost all operating faults result in a diminishing of the
cleaning power of the plant. Identify these faults early on and fix them or have a qualified maintenance
technician fix them right away.
When working on an opened septic tank cover, there is a risk of tripping and falling in!
Use suitable measures to secure the open pit. Workers or other people could fall into the
tank! Children are especially at risk!
Gases (some of which may be toxic) often form as part of the biological decomposition in
small-scale sewage plants, For this reason, make sure a second person is on hand to
secure the entrance to the plant. Never go in after a person who has fallen unconscious.
Always seek help as quickly as possible.
