Absolute magnetic encoder system

Startup
5.1
Starting up the system
Uncontrolled system movement
When starting up, if the magnetic encoder system is part
of a closed loop system whose parameters have not yet
been set, the system may perform uncontrolled
movements. This could result in personal injury and
equipment damage.
► Persons must keep away from the system's
hazardous zones.
► Startup must be performed only by trained technical
personnel.
► Observe the safety instructions of the equipment or
system manufacturer.
1. Check connections for tightness and correct polarity.
Replace damaged connections or devices.
2. Turn on the system.
3. Make count direction, offset and measuring range
settings.
The setting possibilities vary depending on
the interface (see Section 6 and 7).
4. Check function.

Status indication/error monitoring
During the measurement signal strength and plausibility of
the absolute position are continuously monitored.
The status of the sensor head is indicated either through
the interface (see Section 6 to 7) or the status LED.
Depending on the interface used the status is broken
down more precisely.
The LED indicates the status in three different levels:
LED color
Status
Description
Green
Normal
System working normally
Yellow
Warning
Measuring signal quality is low
1)
Red
Error
System or measuring error
The measuring signal quality is supported only by the Smart-Sensor
1)
Profile Ed. 2 Enhanced.
Warning (indicated by yellow LED)
–
Signal quality monitoring: The signal quality drops
below a certain threshold as soon as the sensor head
leaves the recommended working range. The sensor
head is still fully functional, but the application should
still be checked to be on the safe side.
Error (indicated by red LED)
–
Plausibility check: If the plausibility check finds an error
in the absolute position or if the signal quality of the
measuring signal is too low, the LED turns red. This
error is reversible and disappears as soon as the
plausibility check is correct again.
–
Sensor head outside measuring range: the sensor
head is being operated outside the taught measuring
range limits or the active measuring surface has left the
tape in the direction of travel.
–
System error: the sensor head is defective or was
incorrectly configured.
For more information about possible sources of
error, see Section 12.1 on page 48.
It is also possible to read the communication status from
the LED:
LED state
Description
Static
No communication
Flashing
Communication present
Certain system commands can trigger a special
signal on the LED when using Smart Sensor
Profile Ed. 2. These special signals are
described along with the respective system
commands.
