Installation Overload Testing
GB
Overview
It is necessary to complete an important overload safety check upon completion of the installation. A simplified
test procedure in accordance with European standard EN81-40 has been created for installed products*.
Details of the test procedure to be done on completion of installation.
1.You should conduct a safe dynamic test by sitting in the chair and riding the stairlift over its full length of
travel. Particular attention should be given to rail security and stability.
2. To overload the stairlift a static test should be conducted. You should park the stairlift at the bottom park
position, secure your toolbox onto the chair or arm rests, then stand on the front edge of the footrest to create
maximum loading, see illustration. Observe the rail security and stability.
3. The same type of static overloading test should be conducted at the upper park position and a mid point on
the rail, providing there is a suitable handrail or feature to give you a hand hold while conducting this test at
height. Observe the rail security and stability.
4. To carry out a static overload test on a retractable rail, park the stairlift directly over start leg support
providing there is a suitable handrail or feature to give you a hand hold. Carry out overloading procedure as
above.
Caution!

When conducting the overload test ensure the toolbox is secured to the chair to prevent it falling.

Your toolbox could mark the chair surfaces ensure you adequately protect the chair.

When conducting the overload test at height ensure you are able to hold something secure to prevent
falling.
When conducting the overload test at height ensure there are no persons directly below you.

*Simplified site test derived from calculations based on rated load and installer weight. (Stannah calculation
sheet CS 250-14)
At overload, the product will flex more than usual. The footrest will flex and get closer to the nosings, although
it is not expected that it will make contact with the nosings. However, if it does this is acceptable, as in ordinary
use the safety pads will ensure that the product stops safely.
A failure is if the overload results in any structural failure of any part of the stairlift or if the fixings pull out,
causing a change in the security of any of the rail support fixings. If this occurs, then the stairlift is not suitable
for end user use.
What to look for when riding stairlift
The rail legs should remain firmly attached to the floor.
The chair should not tilt excessively.
Expected minimum clearances should be maintained
throughout journey.
What to look for during overload test
The rail leg should remain firmly attached to the floor.
No excessive flexing of the rail.
