Spinomed
Intended purpose
Spinomed is a back brace. The product is
exclusively to be used for the orthotic
fitting of the spine and only on unbroken
skin.
Indications
• Degenerative changes of the thoracic
and lumbar spine due to osteoporosis
• Juvenile Scheuermann's disease
Contraindications
None known to date.
Adjusting the back brace
When you take the orthosis from its
pack, the back brace is already
anatomically preformed (A). To fit the
orthosis to the shape of the vertebral
column, hold the brace up to the
patient's back so that the lower edge of
the brace is level with the coccyx. The
upper edge should extend to 1 to 5 cm
below C7. The whole length of the brace
may be adjusted to its optimum shape.
Shape the middle section of the brace
over a round object, until the required
kyphosis/lordosis is obtained.
Please note: the Spinomed should be
cold formed, i.e. it must not be heated.
Attachment of padding
Do not attach the padding until the back
brace has been correctly shaped.
Start in the middle.
Adjusting the straps
The belt strap eyelets are
thermoplastically mouldable. To mould
the belt strap eyelets set the heat gun to
500°C and hold it at a distance of about
3 cm away from the belt strap eyelets.
Warning. The belt strap must be
removed first. The belt straps are
®
adjusted in the following order: pelvic
belt (B), elastic middle belt (C) and
shoulder straps(D). To adjust, open the
Yshaped velcro fastenings, tighten the
belt strap to the appropriate length and
do up again. Once all straps are correctly
adjusted, scissors may be used to trim
off the surplus ends.
Pelvic strap
Ensure that the pelvic straps run below
the hip bone. These should be tightened
as firmly as possible.
Shoulder strap
The shoulder strap should gently
straighten the patient but not cut in. The
tension should be adjusted so that the
strap is flat on the shoulder, but so that
one finger can still be slipped gently
under the strap. Check the fit of the
shoulder pad, which should be
positioned so that the pad is in contact
with the anterior aspect of the shoulder
(Figure 2). The belt strap should roll up
under the axilla, to prevent rubbing.
Caution: To prevent the back brace from
slipping out of position, the pelvic belt
should be tighter than the shoulder
straps. Although upward slipping of the
brace will not affect the function of the
orthosis, the patient should pull the
back brace down again.
Checking the fit of the brace
• Back pad adjusted to the shape of the
patient's spine
• Pelvic belt running tightly under the
hip bone
• Shoulder strap tightened less firmly
and not cutting in
• Shoulder pad in optimum position
• Length of flexible back strap adjusted
so that strap guide rings cannot exert
pressure and the patient's shoulders
are pulled back sufficiently. Spinomed
