d) Start line axis and favorable side
On the dial, the line between 3 and 9 o'clock represents the perpendicular
(neutral) start line in comparison to the wind arrow index located at 12 o'clock.
The symbols «+» and «-» on each side of the start line enable a swift line of sight
of the favorable side depending on the wind direction.
e) Examples of use
1. Upwind angle:
• Position the boat upwind (windward), sails luffing, and check the wind axis digit
on the onboard compass.
• On your watch, rotate the graduated compass bezel to position the wind axis
digit on the arrow index at 12 o'clock.
Example:
If the wind measurement is at 90° (east), position the number 90 on the bezel
facing the arrow wind index at 12 o'clock. On the bezel, facing the two respective
arrows (at -/+45°), you will thus be able to read what your heading is on either side.
In this case, for a classic upwind angle (45° to the wind), you will be able to read
45° on starboard tack and on 135° port tack.
NB: Port tack is referred to when the wind blows from the port (left) side of the
boat and starboard tack when it comes from the starboard or right hand side. In
sailing, starboard tack is the priority side.
