Reading Codes

The Read Codes function is used to retrieve Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
from the vehicle's on-board computer/s. Diagnostic Trouble Codes are set
when the computer/s recognizes a condition outside preset ranges. A Malfunc-
tion Indicator Lamp (MIL) that is on indicates that a DTC has been recorded.
Because DTCs indicate a circuit or system failure, not component failures,
changing parts with out diagnosing the circuit or system may result in good
components being unnecessarily replaced
vehicle concerns.
To read codes from the vehicle's computer/s, follow the steps below:
• Be sure that all steps in Test Preparation (Section 3) are complete.
• Turn the vehicle's ignition key to the ON position.
• Press and release the READ button.
All four Code Type Indicators will light momentarily to indicate the tester is
working.
Once the codes are read they will be displayed on the Numeric and Code Type
indicators. Use the up/down arrow key to scroll through the DTCs if more than
one is retrieved. If 0 is displayed there are no codes stored according to the
OBD II specifications.
If you get flashing 8888 (link error message), make sure the DLC adapter cable
is properly attached to the vehicle connector and the ignition is on. If the
problem remains, refer to Section 5: Trouble-Shooting Tips.
CAUTION: Do not disconnect the tester until you have
recorded the DTC/s. Disconnecting unpowers the
tester and its memory is cleared.
Note: Because the numerical DTC number means
different things for different systems, be sure to
note the Code Type.
Refer to Section 1 if needed for a brief description of DTCs. OBD II Generic
Diagnostic Trouble Code meanings can be found in Section 6: Code
Meanings. Manufacturer specific DTCs will require the use of a vehicle
service manual of some form.
