When to use the Tester
Use the tester:
• When you experience a driveability problem with your vehicle.
• When the MIL "Malfunction Indicator Lamp" (check engine light) comes on.
Even if the MIL goes off DTCs may be retrieved.
• For a routine system check.

What does the Tester do

The OBD II Diagnostic Tester plugs into the vehicle's wiring which connects into
the powertrain controller (computer). The tester uses this connection to
communicate with the vehicle and retrieve DTCs. The tester can also erase
the codes.

The OBD II Diagnostic Tester

1. READ Button -
retrieve DTC from the vehicle.
2. ERASE Button -
erase DTC stored in the vehicle's
computer. NOTE: the button must be
pressed for 2-3 seconds before erasure
will occur. This helps prevent accidental
erasing.
3. UP DOWN Button -
used to scroll through the codes after
retrieval, if more than one DTC is re-
trieved.
4. NUMERIC DISPLAY -
seven segment displays will be used to
display the numerical portion of the DTCs.
5. CODE TYPE INDICATORS -
DTC is being displayed one of these four
LEDs will be lit to show what code type.
Powertrain for P, Body for B, Chassis for
C, Uart (network) for U.
6. OBD II (J1962) ADAPTER -
connector is used to connect to the
vehicle's mating OBD II diagnostic
connector.
