What is OBD II?
OBD II stands for On Board Diagnostic II (second generation). OBD II systems
are designed to meet or exceed a set of standards and regulations to improve air
quality. These standards and regulations were set forth by the EPA's Clean Air
Act of 1990. Most of these standards and regulations were developed by CARB
(California Air Research Board). OBD II systems are to have the capability of
monitoring the performance of emission related systems and their components.
Ability to detect hard and intermittent faults are further requirements of an OBD II
compliant system.
The Society of Automotive Engineers spelled out several standards that are also
a part of OBD II compliance. These standards include criteria for: the diagnostic
link connector, communication signals, DTCs, descriptor names, and other
repair information.
About Diagnostic Trouble Codes
Where do they come from and what are they for?
Vehicle computers can find problems - The computer systems in today's
vehicles do more than control system operations - it can help you find prob-
lems, too! Special testing abilities are permanently programmed into the
computers by the manufacturer. These tests check the components to the
computer which are used for (typically): fuel delivery, idle speed control, spark
timing and emission systems. Mechanics have used these tests for years.
Now you can do the same thing by using the Actron OBD II Diagnostic Tester.
Powertrain computers perform special tests - The powertrain controller runs
special tests. These tests examine INPUTS (electrical signals going IN to the
computer) and OUTPUTS (electrical signals coming OUT of the computer.)
Input signals which have "wrong" values or outputs circuits which don't behave
correctly are noted by the test program and the results are stored in the
computer's memory. The computer can not control the engine properly if it has
bad inputs or outputs!
Diagnostic Trouble Code - DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) is a term used to
describe an alpha-numeric code that represents a possible problem in the
vehicle's control systems. When the On-Board Computer recognizes and
identifies a problem in the computer-monitored systems it will store a DTC in is
memory. These codes are intended to help the technician find the root cause
of a problem.
