Erasing Codes

The Erase Codes function is used to erase the trouble codes from the test vehicle's
PCM. The Erase DTC/s functions also erases freeze frame data, O2 sensor test
data, system monitors, and on-board monitoring test results, which may be
accessed by Scan Tool type equipment. The OBD II diagnostic Tester's memory is
also cleared of DTCs when ERASE is selected. Because of this you should erase
codes after you have checked the system completely and written the DTCs down.
Erase Codes should be performed at Key On, Engine Off to properly clear the
PCM. After servicing the vehicle be sure to erase DTCs and verify they do not
reappear. If the DTC/s returns the problem has not been corrected properly or
another fault is still present.
CAUTION: There is NO second chance to stop the
erase codes. Only press the ERASE button when you
are sure you want the codes erased.
To Erase Codes from your vehicle's computer, follow the steps below:
• Be sure that all steps in Test Preparation (Section 3) are complete.
• Turn the vehicle's ignition key to the ON position. DO NOT start the engine.
DTCs may not be erased while the engine is running.
• Press and hold the ERASE button for about 5 seconds. The four LEDs
will light to show that you have requested to erase codes.
If you get flashing 8888 (link error message), make sure the DLC adapter cable
is properly attached to the vehicle connector and the ignition is on. If the
problem remains, refer to Section 5: Trouble-Shooting Tips.
Note: The reason for making you hold the button for 5
seconds is to ensure you intend to erase the codes and
did not accidentally press the button.
After sending the erase codes instruction to the vehicle and clearing the
testers memory a 0 will be displayed to verify erase codes function was
performed.
