Operating the Thomas Bankout
Note: Do not tow the Thomas Bankout to start or to transport. To do so may cause
serious damage to transmission or hydrostat system. Contact Manufacturer for
additional information.
Starting the Engine
Caution: Before starting engine, make certain that the Hydrostat control is in neutral.
1. Turn starter key clockwise to energize starter. When engine starts, release key
immediately. Do not crank engine for more than 30 seconds at one time. Wait at
least three minutes between 30 second cranking period to allow starter motor to
cool. Continuous cranking will cause starter motor to overheat and possibly fail.
Note: If engine fails to start, consult the "Trouble-Shooting" section of this
manual.
2. After starting, allow engine to run for a few minutes without load. Engine must
reach operating temperature before being placed under full load. This practice
avoids excessive wear on internal engine parts.
Engine Speeds
Avoid extensive engine idling. Extended idling allows engine to cool, causing incomplete
combustion, oil dilution, and rapid sludge formation.
Operating Loaded Engine
Operate machine in proper gear to avoid "lugging engine". "Lugging", or pulling heavy
loads at too low an engine speed (RPM), causes overheating. This overheating can
cause rapid destruction of internal components.
Shift transmission to a lower gear if the engine is found to be "lugging". Watch gauges
often under all conditions to make certain that all systems are operating properly!
Stopping the Engine
Run engine at fast idle for five minutes before shutting it off for an extended time. This
will allow engine parts to cool gradually, thereby giving better long-term service. Stop
the engine only by turning off engine starter key. Remove Starter key and store in
secure place to prevent unauthorized use of equipment.
