Safe Operation is Basic

The farm is one of the most hazardous workplaces in the United States. Over 30% of
farm accidents involve injury by farm machinery or vehicles, such as trucks.
Accidents Can Be Avoided
Safe working procedures are a necessary part of everyday farm management. This set
of attitudes and habits become a part of the way in which every member of the working
team approaches his or her job. For instance, it is up to each individual to ensure that
the Thomas Bankout is never used to transport passengers, riders, or materials other
than those for which it is designed. One need not witness injury inflicted by an auger or
other mechanism to feel motivation for avoiding such accidents.
A Challenge to Equipment Owners and Operators ...Prevent
Accidents!
1. Know your limitations. Allow time during the work shift for rest periods. Many
accidents happen because of operator fatigue.
2. Learn about common machine hazards. Make certain that you and your workforce
know the do's and don'ts when operating farm machinery.
3. Learn the Operators Manual! Teach your workers and operators this manual.
4. Keep all safety decals and signs on your machines readable and in good condition.
Replace all those which are scratched or unreadable.
5. Make certain that all members of the workforce understand how to communicate
clearly with machine operators and each other.
