Pre-Installation Check

Before you start on a new residen-

tial water well system, check local
well codes and plumbing require-
ments. Be sure your well is the
required minimum distance away
from sources of contamination, such
as cistern, septic tank field, field
tile, etc.
Always disinfect the well and test

well water for purity before us-
ing. Check with your local Health
Department for testing procedures.
Make sure your well is covered with

a pitless adaptor or sanitary well
seal to prevent contamination and
pump damage.
Always drain the pump and tank

tion, such as foot valves, well adap-
tors, couplings, unions and piping
must be purchased separately. Your
Red Jacket Jet Pump can be adapt-
ed horizontally to shallow well or
drive point systems (see Figure 1).
Initial Piping In A Shallow Well
1.
To insure continual priming on a shallow well sys-
tem (see Figure 1), a foot valve must be installed.
On a drive point system (see Figure 1), a check
valve must be installed as close as possible to the
pump. Examine the foot valve or check valve to see
that it is clean and seated properly.

Inspect the piping to be sure it is free of obstruc-
tions such as dirt. Galvanized iron pipe is often
used, but plastic pipe can be used if allowable
under existing state plumbing codes. Use either
non-toxic pipe sealing compound or tape on male
thread joints of galvanized pipe (tape or cement on
plastic pipe) to facilitate making air-tight joints.
3.
To install the suction drop pipe in an existing shal-
low well, support the pipe with a pipe holder or
clamp. Fill each pipe section with water when low-
ering, constantly observing for leaks. Install the foot
valve no closer that two (2) feet from the bottom of
the well to prevent sucking in sand, mud, or other
foreign matter.
4.
Most drive point systems will require three to four
lengths of 5-foot drive pipe. Each length of pipe
should be coupled with a heavy duty drive pipe
coupling and sealed with thread compound or
tape starting at the well point. To install a drive
point system, use slip-over drive weight to help
insure hard, concentric blows when pounding the
point into the ground. The drive weight may be
dropped manually, by a rope and pulley tripod, or
by a mechanical pounder. When installing the drive
point, a noticeable increase in penetration will oc-
cur when you reach the water-bearing formation.
To check this, pour water into the pipe at a rate of 2
gpm. If the water level inside the pipe does not rise
you can assume you have reached a water table.
