As soon as the temple supports are worked on, a laser beam will point out
the median sagittal plane on the patient's face, as illustrated in figure 3. As
the temple supports move independently, the patient can be guided into the
correct position so that the median sagittal plane coincides with the light
beam. Make sure the patient is looking straight forward as even if the light
beam seems to be in the correct position the patient's head may by slightly
tilted on one side.
Keep the temple supports against the patient's head and move your index
fingers away. An electromechanical brake will keep the temple supports in
place (a click will be heard). At this point, the operator can move his/her
hands away.
Place the patient's head so that the Frankfurt plane coincides with the light
beam of the Frankfurt plane. The back of the patient's neck does not have
to be moved for this purpose. To adjust how the patient's head is tilted, raise
or lower the unit with the height control buttons. The patient must be stand-
ing perfectly straight. If necessary, straighten the patient's neck or elongate
it by slightly moving the unit up.
The Frankfurt plane's light beam is provided by a laser device found on the
x-ray generator side. It can be adjusted upwards and downwards to adapt
to heads of different sizes. Use the switch found beside the light opening for
this purpose.
The light beam should pass from the lower margin of the orbit to the upper
margin of the acoustic meatus so that these two points are on the same
horizontal plane, as shown in figure 4.
A third laser beam indicates the exact position of the unit's focal spot. In or-
der to perfectly focus the required area, this beam should coincide with the
cusp of the upper canine, as shown in the chart given on the x-ray generator
side (see figure 4).
This procedure brings the apex of the upper central incisors within the focal
spot.
