5.3b Positioning the patient for the "CEPH LL" examination
The unit is moved by carrying out the following tasks. The operator must:

Make sure the machine is always in its home position before beginning any patient positioning tasks or any exposure
programme.

Before positioning the patient, make sure all metal objects/accessories such as glasses, denture plates, earrings
and any other removable metal objects at head level are removed. If a radiation protection bib is used make sure the
patient's neck is not covered otherwise there will be an area of image not exposed to X-rays.
To execute CEPH projections, hyperion has a head holder with auricular and nose supports to help a standing patient
maintain the correct position. Patients who are very short, very tall or in a wheelchair can, however, do the examination
sitting down.
Preliminary tasks:
• Select the CEPH LAT-LAT STD examination on the hyperion control panel;
• If the hyperion unit is equipped with one image detector, position it on the teleradiography arm;
• If not already in position, turn the head holder manually so that the nose support is at the front (figure 1);
• Open the auricular rods of the head holder to their maximum aperture;
• Place the hygiene covers on the auricular supports;
• Rotate the nose support 90°, setting it to a vertical position.
Bring the patient close to the teleradiography arm (patient orientated with sagittal plane parallel to movement of image
detector) and adjust the height of the motor-driven column by using the keys so that the auricular supports of the head
holder are level with the patient's outer ear canal.
Have the patient move backwards underneath the head holder; ask him/her to maintain an erect position with a natural
posture and eyes facing forwards.
Make sure the Frankfurt plane is horizontal.
Close the auricular rods carefully so they are placed in the patient's outer ear.
Rotate the nose support into a vertical position and adjust it vertically so that its lower extremity rests on the patient's
nose tip (see figure 1).
Ask the patient to remain still with his/her mouth closed.
