SURROUND EFFECTS
CENTER Mode
There are 3 kinds of the center modes. Select the
desired mode suitable to your speaker system.
NORMAL Mode
Use this position when the center speaker is a compact
speaker which is not capable of fully reproducing bass
frequencies below 100 Hz. In this mode, the bass
frequencies below 100 Hz are distributed to the front
left and right speakers.
WIDE Mode
Use this position when the center speaker is an
equivalent speaker to the front left and right speakers
or when it is capable of fully reproducing bass
frequencies below 100 Hz.
PHANTOM Mode
Use this position when the center speaker is not used.
The center channel sound is distributed to the left and
right front speakers.
When not using a center speaker with the DOLBY
PRO LOGIC surround function, set the CENTER mode
to PHANTOM.
DOLBY 3 STEREO has only NORMAL and WIDE
modes, not PHANTOM mode which DOLBY PRO
LOGIC has altogether with the former two modes.
Delay Time
By adjusting the very small time difference between
the sound output from the front speakers and the
sound output from the rear speakers (this is referred to
as the delay time), it is possible to freely control the
sound field of the wide space created by the surround
effect.
In the DOLBY PRO LOGIC mode, the delay time is used
to fine-tune the surround effect. In other surround
modes, it can be used freely according to the
characteristics of the listening room as well as to the
listener's liking.
In the DOLBY PRO LOGIC mode, the delay time
adjustment range is set by the specification to
between 15 ms and 30 ms.

Speaker Positioning

The installation positions of speakers differ according
to the size, and acoustics of the listening room. While
actually listening to a program source, try various
speaker positions to determine which layout provides
the best surround effect.
Speaker layout example when using DOLBY PRO
LOGIC surround and the DVD 6-channel mode
Front Speakers:
Place to the front left and right of the listening position.
Front speakers are required for all surround modes.
Center Speaker:
Place front and center. This speaker stabilizes the
sound image and helps recreate sound motion. Be
sure to connect a center speaker when using the
Dolby 3 STEREO mode.
Rear Speakers:
Place to the direct left and right. These speakers
recreate sound motion and atmosphere. Required for
surround playback. For best results, do not install the
rear speakers too far behind the listening position
and install them above the level of the listener's ears.
It is also effective to direct the rear speakers towards
a wall or ceiling to further disperse the sound.
Subwoofer:
Reproduces powerful deep bass sounds.
