Tie Rod/Ball Joint Separator Set
Usage Instructions
NOTE: If tie rod and ball joint are to be reused, puller-type tools should be used instead of wedge-type. Wedge-type separators may
damage the rubber boot of the tie rod or ball joint, and should only be used when the part is to be replaced.
CAUTION: Never re-use cotter pins. Always replace used cotter pins with new ones after they have been straightened.
Separating Tie Rods
1. Slightly loosen lug nuts while vehicle is still on the ground. Raise and support vehicle. Remove lug nuts and wheel and set aside.
Straighten and remove cotter pin from hole in tie rod stud and castellated nut using a pair of long-nosed pliers. See figure a. Using
an end wrench or ratchet, loosen and remove nut from tie rod end stud.
See figure b.
CAUTION: Always wear eye protection when striking the wedge-type tool with hammer.
CAUTION: When the tie rod end stud breaks free of the steering knuckle, the tie rod end and steering rack
end may suddenly fall. Prior to disassembly, tie the assembly up with a zip tie or safety wire, or otherwise
ensure that there is no danger of being injured by the falling tie rod.
2. Spray penetrating oil around the tie rod end stud. Position the tines of the tie rod separator around the stud
and strike the end with a hammer until separated, making sure to follow proper safety precautions. See
figures c and d.
